Whalers

Despite the score, this was a really competitive game until late in the third period when the Whaler's opened things up.  Whaler's 19 year old rookie Ezra "The Rock" Mock netted four goals in the third period and the Mustang's 17 year old rookie Logan "The Cat" Caffrey added a pair of goals in the loss.  Both Mock & Caffrey were key players on Hartford High School's Division 2 State Championship team last season.

The difference in this game was goaltending as the Whaler's netminder, Jered "The Condor" Condon was outstanding, making 34 saves.  Despite Condon looking like a 50 year old, he still moves as if he was a high-schooler terrified of letting down legendary Hanover High coach Dicky Dodds.  Condon needed to be big in the first as he turned away 15 shots including 3 high danger changes from the Mustangs.   His counterpart, Colin "Far from Bad" Farr wasn't quite as dynamic in the net, but did make 29 saves on 36 shots not including the empty netter.

The Whaler's jumped out to a 1-0 lead, at 7:36 of the first, on a garbage goal when Brandon "The Big Cheese" Chiasson hammered home a loose puck in the slot surrounded by Mustangs players.  On the ensuing shift, the Whaler's forwards flew the zone early on a turnover, leaving the Mustang's down low with a 4 on 2.  A centering pass from Will "The Thrill" Mudge was poked away by a Whaler's defenseman, but right onto the stick of Caffrey who beat Condon low glove side with a quick strike.  Condon followed that up with a trio of big saves on Geoff "Collateral Damage" Colla, James "The Doughboy" Baker & Jamal "The Sabre" Sabky as the Whale's defensive zone coverage imploded around Condon.

A minute later the Whaler's hammered home another garbage goal, this time by Aidan "Boonzilla" Boonyaharn off a Scotty "Pizza Man" Christian pointshot.  It was utterly embarrassing as Boonyaharn was surrounded by 3 Mustang players, none of which took a stick.  "Seriously, what the fuck?!?!  Wait, can I swear in this interview?" recalled goaltender Colin Farr, "Just ridiculous, I'm out here throwing my body around like a porno actress in a gangbang and these guys can't take a man!  ONE FUCKING MAN!!!" (not an actual quote from Farr, but pretty sure that is what he was thinking)

Thye Mustangs tied it up 25 seconds later when Caffrey got his 2nd of the game off a rebound from a Brian "Gritty G" Geraghty shot.  Again, poor defensive play from the Whaler's on display, but capitalized on by Geraghty as made a fool of both the Whaler's Dan "The Fenomenon" Fenton & Scotty Christian.

END OF THE FIRST:  Game tied at 2 apiece
SHOTS: Mustangs 17, Whalers 13

Only one goal was scored in the second period just under 3 minutes into the frame.  This time it was off the rush with Colson "Colossus" Allen and Aidan Boonyharn attacking two on one.  Allen let a hard shot go from just inside the top of the circle and Farr was up to the challenge.  The puck dribbled through, but Farr was able to swipe it out of the crease and to Boonyaharn who threw it back in the crease.   All 5 of the Mustang's players decended into extreme puck tracking mode and leaving Allen wide open to jam the loose puck home.  3 Garbage Goals for the Whalers.  3 Avoidable goals for the Mustangs.

Chances at both ends of the rink closed out the period.  Fenton rang the post on Farr, followed by a turnover in the Whaler's zone that led to Caffrey and Dylan "Parkour" Parker chances.  Those saves by Condon were huge in the 3-2 goal and Farr came up with an even bigger one on Whaler's captain Dan "Vanguard" VeNard as Ben "The Rou-ster" Rouillard roared down the far boards going one-on-one with a Mustang's Defender.  Rouillard put the brakes on, spun and hit VeNard who skated right past a pair of Mustang's for a grade-A scoring opportunity by Farr.

The Mustang's outshot the Whalers 18-10 in the second frame, but many of their shots came from the perimeter.  Of the Whaler's 10 shots, 7 of them were high danger compared to only 3 for the Stangs.

END OF THE SECOND: Whalers 3, Mustangs 2
SHOTS: Whalers 24, Mustangs 35

VeNard going things going 5 minutes into the third on an absolute blast from the point, beating Farr Five-Holio and then Mock put the Whaler's up 5-2 with his first career UVHL goal off a wide pointshot from Chiasson, that careened off the end-boards to Mock waiting on the other side of the net for the one-timer into the empty cage.

The Mustang's weren't about to lay down and die, and off the ensuing faceoff, a Whaler's turnover at the far blueline, saw Colla enter the zone and feed Sabky with some backhand special sauce.  Sabky took the puck out of his skates and let a half-clapper go from the high slot, beating Condon glove side.  Probably one that Condon would love to have back, but I'm sure he'll blame it on his defender, or the ice, or maybe the humidity or upcoming presidential election.

On the next faceoff, Sabky hit Baker streaking down the near side with speed, he turned his defender and cut hard to the net, chipping a puck past Condon to make it a 5-4 game.  10 seconds after their last goal and 23 seconds after the Whaler's goal.  We've got a game!  And it didn't take long for the Mustangs to tie it, as the next shift they gained posession, got the Whaler's forwards chasing and then Ryan "The McGovernator" McGovern absolutely blasted a point shot past Condon to tie the game...only for it to immediately be called back due to goaltender interference.  Still 5-4 Whalers with 6 minutes to play.

Mock finished the scoring with a natural hattrick in the last 1:33.  The first came off a pinch at the point by a Mustang's defender and Rouillard pushed the puck up to Mock with speed on the far boards for a 3 v 1 with the Mustang's backchecking hard.  Mock looked to pass then beat Farr low glove side with a quick snapper.  Almost the exact same play happened 30 seconds later with the goalie pulled and Mock deposited the puck into the back of the empty net for the hattrick followed by a sheathing of his stick and hat tip to his bench which infuriated a few of the Mustang players in a 7-4 game.  In Mock's defense, I was chirping him earlier in the game about how he had zero goals and points and was about 17% in the faceoff dot, the hat tip was to me and not disrespect to the Mustang's who played a fantastic game.  Mock finished the natural hattrick off(and 4th of the game) on a gorgeous tic-tac-toe play when Rouillard hit Ean "Not So" Small to Farr's left, only for Small to hit Mock back door for the tap in...no celebration this time.

FINAL: Whalers 8, Mustangs 4
