The score won't tell you just how close this game was and that a pair of late goals by the Whalers put this one out of reach. The new look Tuck Business School Flying Turduckens are not the same team they were last year, but they are still young, skilled and dangerous. Every time the Whalers looked like they put the game out fo reach, Tuck answered.
The top line for the Whalers was outstanding. Rookie Ezra "The Mutant" Mock(1g, 2a) centering Ean "It Ain't" Small(2g, 1a) & Ben "Rough Rider" Rouillard(1g,1a) combined with the stellar goaltending of Jered "The Condor" Condon(35 saves) drove the bus to the win. Tuck got another excellent performance from Maclean "The Valor" Lalor(2g), Mikey "Ya Belong" Yablong(2a) on defense and Nicholas "Psycho" Sullivan who one player commented "That guy skates around the entire game with a smirk on his face, like a crazy smirk, like a very evil and weird smirk."
Lalor's two goals drove the offense, but he was solid defensively. He rang the post in the 2nd period and the Whaler's quickly identified him as a player to "not let shoot." "That dude can snipe. Fuck it, I'm not getting in the way of that shot. Good luck Condon!" Said Whaler's Defenseman Brandon "The Chasm" Chiasson.
The Whalers came out flying in the first period and Tuck's net guy, Marshall Jenkins, was called upon early. The first came off Rouillard who took a pass through the high slot from Small, only to have Jenkins slide through the crease and make a positionally sound save. The next shift Aidan "Boondocks" Boonyaharn cut around a Tuck defender and through the crease, putting the puck between his legs, shooting, only to hit the post. Rouillard got on the board as he stormed down the middle of the ice and redirected a great, hard pass from Small inside the near post to make it 1-0 Whalers with 10:01 to play. Small was the recipient of a great pass from Mock at 4:15 as Mock traversed the tops of the circles and fed Small back across the grain. Small was all alone on Jenkins, making a quick move to his back hand for the 2-0 lead.
END OF THE FIRST: Whalers 2, Tuck 0
SHOTS: Whalers 12, Tuck 13
All felt good in the Whaler's world, as they had this game in hand. They were carrying play and despite being outshot in the first, the Whalers had the advantage in possession and high danger scoring opportunities. That feeling didn't last long as the Whaler's Captain Dan "Vanguard" VeNard took a checking penalty with 8 seconds to go in the first period. The ensuing powerplay yielded a goal by Adam "Big Mac" Macsata as he jammed home a rebound off a Yablong pointshot. That goal gave Tuck some life and they continuted to press until Mock broke down the far boards with speed on his off-wing. Mock let a quick wrister go from outside the face-off dot that went 5-holio on Marshall....not a good goal and one that Jenkins would love back. The Whaler's momentum was back until VeNard broke down the near wing and let an absolute bomb go that was about 2 feet high and wrapped around the boards...a perfect breakout pass for Tuck. Lalor picked the puck up and attacked a lone Whaler's defenseman 3 on 1 before sniping a low shot on Condon that he got a piece of, but not clearly enough to cut the lead back to 1 goal. In the final minute of the 2nd, Matthew "Matty Ice" Goff, gangled both Mock and Chiasson before Condon shut the door with a glove save. Lalor then rang the post like it was the dinner bell. The shot was from a bad angle, at the bottom of the circle to Condon's right. Get on your angle Condon, that's embarrassing.
END OF THE SECOND: Whalers 3, Tuck 2
SHOTS: Whalers 22, Tuck, 23
The Whalers again opened the game up in the first minute of the third when Dan "The Feline" Fenton fired a shot from the far boards on net. Jenkins left a juicy rebound in the crease where Scotty "Too Hotty" Christian was waiting. "Good players go to the puck. Great players go to where the puck is going to be. I just stop and sit in the crease and wait." - Scotty Christian, hockey God.
The game was close for the next 10 minutes as most of the play was between the blue-lines and shots from the perimeter until Lalor got his 2nd on a great pass from Ouellette as Lalor entered the zone. The Whaler's were exhausted and puck watching as Lalor let a laser beam go through a screen from the high slot, beating Condon blocker side. Fenton found VeNard in the high slot for an insurance goal with 3:05 to play and Small got his 2nd of the night 30 seconds later after stripping Lalor at the Whaler's blueline and going in on Jenkins all alone. Again, Small went forehand to backhand for the 3 goal lead.
END OF GAME: Whalers 6, Tuck 3
