Gambler's Streak Hits 22 Wins: Beat Dead River 5-2

This game was actually pretty close for the first 25 minutes before the G-Men opened things up for the eventual 5-2 win. A large reason why the game was close at first was the absence of the Gambler's captain and league scoring leader, "Wet" Willy Meyer. Meyer arrived late due to complications with his beard trimmers, but had an immediate impact upon arrival, but the most outstanding player in the ice tonight was the Gambler's 18 year old rookie, Luke "Skywalker" Ceplikas. Ceplikas potted 2 goals and a help while driving Dead River crazy with his speed and tenacity.

This was a 1-1 game after the first period. The G-Men struck first on an Evan "Almighty" Duggan turnover. Duggan saw a long pass from his own corner through center ice, but Topo "The Bottom" LaCroix picked it off at the tops of the circles and made Dead River's Greg "Gumby" Feiden look foolish with a quick shot at 13:43. Rob "Patty Cakes" Pattison cleaned up some garbage in the slot to tie the game at 1 apiece at 10:42 to close out the scoring in the first period. Surprisingly, no penalties in the first period and a nice flow to the game.

END OF THE FIRST: Gamblers 1, Dead River 1

Meyer arrived in the 2nd period, and took a few minutes to get out of first gear, shaking off the cobwebs while checking out his beard in the reflection of the glass. Dead River played strong and aggressive hockey, limiting the Gamblers to the perimeter while Feiden turned away everything as he resembled a goalie for a bit.

Dead River killed off a "Mean" Dean Cashman interference penalty early, before another Duggan turnover up the middle ended in a Dan "The Danimal" Ammel unassisted goal with 4:18 remaining in the period. Ceplikas got the eventual game winner less than 2 minutes later from LaCroix and Meyer followed by a Marc "The Narc" Gattie blast from the point that Feiden lost in a sreen to put the Gamblers up 4-1 at the end of the second.

A lapse at the end of the second period doomed Dead River, as they were outplayed for the last 5 minutes and gave up 3 goals that they couldn't recover.

END OF THE SECOND: Gamblers 4, Dead River 1

The third period saw a little chippyness and 5 more penalties. Ricky Golden "Showers" took 2 of the penalites for hooking and roughing it up with Ammel, but none of the penalties ended with a puck in the net.

Ceplikas added his 2nd of the night from his new best buddy, LaCroix at 5:16 and the oldest man in the upper valley, Marty "Greybeard" White got his 2nd of the season from Duggan and pattison to close out the scoresheet.

END OF REGULATION: Gamblers 5, Dead River 2

Dead River played a solid game, minus a 4 minute stint that saw their chance of winning this game evaporate. The Gamblers do what they do best, winning. They took advantage of turnovers and played solid defense in front of their solid goaltender.

Dead River is always a crap shoot, which makes them dangerous in the playoffs, and the Gamblers are the Gamblers...the favorites. Playoffs start next week: 3/29/2011
