Tuck too tough for Leafs on Opening Night

It was a highly anticipated match-up on Opening Night '06-07. The vastly improved Leafs were looking forward to a bounce back season being forced to rebuild after being decimated last year by non-returnees. Their "Heart and Soul of Hockey" captain, Sean Casavant, was fired up to get his troops ready for battle, and battle they did. Unfortunately, it was against a superior opponent that has improved themselves exponentially compared to last season as Tuck re-tooled with the addition of 2/3 new first year players all from D1 and D3 schools, and a handful of former high school players. With every team improved in the UVHL this season, there will be no off nights for a team to coast to victory. Opening Night proved that several times over with surprise scorefests from two teams that got spanked regularly last season. Yet again the first entry on the scoresheet was a penalty, and it was to Leaf captain Casavant at 12:14 for holding, but that was the only infraction of the period. The Leafs killed it off, but it was Tuck captain Gary Hunter who drew first blood, twice. Hunter's first was at 9:15 from Mark Schegerin, and then Hunter found the mark again at 8:36 from Alex Tatum to put Tuck up 2-0. Trevor Martin scored his first UVHL goal for Tuck at 2:45 assisted by James Greenthal and Bennett Morgan, also with their first UVHL points. The always dangerous Kevin Louzier narrowed the gap back to two scoring 32 seconds later reunited with his Hartford Hurricane linemate Todd Nalette, who assisted on the play along with UVHL guest Eric Demment. The score was 3-1 Tuck to start the second period, but Hunter scored an unassisted goal at 11:24 to bring Tuck's lead back to a comfortable 3 goals. Tuck's Peter Hanbury went to the box at 8:00 for bodychecking. Tuck co-captain Alek Roomet, returning as one of the 5 players from last season, scored the first of two shortys aginst the Leaf's inept PP at 7:29 from puck control wizard Scott Turco. Turco then set-up Brian Fleming for his first UVHL goal at 7:18 as the Leafs' brain fart continued to make it an unmanageable 6-1. Hunter went to the box at 5:32 for hooking, and the Leafs finally scored on the PP at 5:05 with Dave "Boots" Bouthillier finding a hole from Louzier and Nalette. Tuck killed off another Leaf PP at 4:55 with Martin in the box for hooking. Back at 5-on-5 Turco, a former Hanover Marauder and (I believe) D1 player at Yale, scored his first UVHL goal at 2:46 connecting with former D3 Middlebury winger Michelle Labbe. Turco continued his heriocs and dismantling of the Leaf defense scoring again at 2:10 from Hunter and Schegerin. Frustrated, Leaf guest player (and former Hanover Marauder alongside Turco) Eric Demment took a hooking penalty with only 0:19 to go in the period, and then Kirt Johnson found his way to the box at 14:26 for interference while on the PK, and these infractions led to Turco's 5-on-3 PPG at 14:16 of the third to complete the Natural Hat Trick assisted by Fleming and Hanbury. Hunter did not let his team sit back, and with Demment now out of the box and Johnson still in, Hunter scored again on the PP from Tatum and co-captain Pat Fox, who seemed to thrive without his brother and last year's Tuck captain John Fox weighing him down on the same line. In fact, the Tuckies showed up to start this season with ALL their jerseys with their names on the backs for their very first game! What incredible organizational skills evidenced by the huge frontal lobes (that is the part of the brain responsible for future planning, eh) by the three Tuck captains this season! Someone related to John Fox, I'm not sure exactly who, said that it was because they've "got Pat Fox in charge and not John Fox this year..." (We miss you Foxxy! I hope you kept a piece or two of that original Whalen Cup you guys busted partyiing with it in '04-05, eh!). Scoring his second of the game at 7:20 was Martin from Schegerin only to be answered by Leaf Jason Loomis at 6:49 from new UVHLers Joe Hayes and John Thomas. Morgan added a goal to his assist at 3:28 from Schegerin, who garnered his 4th assist of the night, and Hanbury with his second assist of the period. Finishing off the scoring was Joe Hayes with his first UVHL goal at 2:39 from Loomis and Boots.
