After last week’s 8-2 loss Legendary NHL Analyst Don Cherry proclaimed that the UVHL’s Whaler’s were the worst team to ever play adult hockey; that they lacked backbone and skill and that they should disband, bury their jerseys and start a chess league. What Cherry didn’t know was that the Whalers had ordered new Uniforms for week 2 and with the new threads would come a new attitude. To be fair, the Whalers still were outclassed, outplayed and outworked, but hell they looked good!
It wasn’t all negative as the Whaler’s, who only had 9 skaters, were drastically better than week one, and after two weeks are trending in the right direction. The Whaler’s Tucker “Big Sexy” Garrity-Hanchett was big, stopping 43 shots and keeping his team in this one for most of the game.
The Gamblers played their game as they were fast and skilled and moved the puck very well. The LaCroix brothers, AKA “Thing 1 & Thing 2” were dominant, scoring 3 of their team’s goals with Ryan “Goose” LaCroix notching a goal on his 50th birthday. Some analysts believe that the Whalers are so kind and generous that they gave this goal to Goose as a birthday gift.
Other notables for the Gamblers were Luke “The Force” McCormick who not only made 30 saves in this one, but also shut down his older brother James “The Lesser” McCormick on a breakaway and a handful of grade-A scoring opportunities. “Big” Ben Perron continued his hot start to the season with a goal and a helper. Zach “The Tinder Tickler” Aher had his best game of the year, only falling down once and managing to finish the game before throwing up.
One of the highlights in this one was that neither team took a single penalty. The game was quick, physical, fun and ended early!
GAME NOTES:
FIRST PERIOD
1-0 - GAMBLERS - The Whalers Scott Christian absolutely hands a gift to the Gamblers Will Meyer as he tried making a move. Meyer took the turnover at the top of the near circle, took a stride to the hashmarks in the slot and let a snapper go that beat Tucker low blocker side.
Tucker stopped Will Meyer on a breakaway late in the 1st to keep it a 1-0 game.
END OF THE FIRST: Gamblers lead 1-0. SHOTS: Gamblers 15, Whalers 5
2-0 - GAMBLERS - Alex Dodds circles the Whalers net and hits Sean Collins at the point. Collins lets a quick wrister go that was tipped in front by Topo “Thing 1” LaCroix…possibly with a high stick. The puck drops and LaCroix locates the loose puck before everyone else done and whacks it in along the ice.
2-1 - WHALERS - Nice rush by Ryan Longfield who works the puck to Scott Christian behind the net. Christian puts a puck through the crease and to CHuck Gaede sneaking in from the right point. Gaede beat McCormick blocker side from the top of the circles.
END OF THE SECOND: Gamblers lead 2-1. SHOTS: Gamblers 33, Whalers 20
3-1 - GAMBLERS - Ryan Bergeron makes a long lob flip pass from his own corner to Spencer Zaha on the fly. Zaha’s sixth sense knew that Ben Perron was blowing by the speedy Kelly Park towards the net and tossed a backhand no-look pass to Perron flying into the slot. Perron took the pass on his backhand and shifted to his forehand beating Tucker up high with a quick in-close shot upstairs where mama keeps the peanut butter.
4-1 - GAMBLERS - A turnover at center ice by a Whaler’s defenseman turned into a 2 on 2 with Will Meyer carrying the puck deep into the Whaler’s corner, pulling both defensemen with him before sliding the puck to Goose “Thing 2” LaCroix in the slot for a quick shot blocker side on Tucker.
4 minutes left and Luke McCormick denies his older brother on a breakaway.
5-1 - GAMBLERS - After a Perron face-off win to Tucker Garrity-Hanchett’s left. Topo “Thing 1” LaCroix backtracked to get the puck near the boards and as both Whaler’s wingers watched, he curled back to the center and right down the middle of the ice before snapping a shot through a screen of 4 players right along the ice, beating TGH blocker side…again.
FINAL: Gamblers win 5-1. SHOTS: Gamblers 48, Whalers 32
