ODDS: | Nords by 3 |
OVER/UNDER: | 11 |
In the second game of the night we have #6 Whalers hosting the #4 Nords. The Whalers come into this week after having last week off due to neither team able to get a goalie. Not to sound like a broken record but the Whalers have been in most games they have played just not getting the puck luck they need.
The Nords come into this week after a heart breaking loss to Tuck. The Nords were up 2-1 going into the third and end up lossing the game in the final minute of the third period giving up two late goals. The Nords have been short numbers lately for various reasons but hopefully soon they will have a full roster again.
This game will be close for a while but the Nords will come out on top winning this game 7-4 with a come back win of their own.
Whalers Get 1st Win of the Season.
The Whalers finally got their first win of the season! The Whale took advantage of a very short-benched Nordiques squad and despite going down 2-1 early, bounced back for a solid win. The Nordiques started the game with a very shorty bench. So short in fact that Shawn "McDefense" McDermott played the entire first period. I don't think there is an accredited physician that would approve or allow Mr. McDermott to do so, but the Nords were in dire straits, starting the game with only 2 players on their bench.
The Whalers jumped out to a 1-0 lead with 4:43 gone in the first when Scotty "Sugar" Shaw buried a Woody Redpath pass. A pair of Nordique goals just 16 seconds apart changed the landscape of the game after Pierce "Mayhem" Mayhew made a fantastic individual effort, picking off a pass and throwing the Triple Deke at Kenny "The Killer" Lallier to tie the game. Stuart "Smally" Grande put the Nords up with a snapper just 16 seconds later and it looked as though the Nordiques were going to roll to their 3rd victory this year over the Whalers but Redpath tied the game late in the first.
Then things changed. Maybe it was the Nordques fatigue, maybe it was the fact that defenseman Kelly "Turnover" Park showed up in the second period, maybe both, but the Whalers turned on the gas and thumped the Nordiques over the next two periods. The Whalers outshot the Nords 15-3 in the second period but could only manage a single goal on the Nordiques Johnny "Temper Tantrum" Turner who was outstanding in this one. Turner made 36 saves on the night allowing only 4 goals (the 5th was an empty netter).
Redpath notched his 2nd of the night from who else but Scotty Shaw less than 2 minutes into the second. Stuey Grande got his 2nd of the night as well on the Nordiques 2nd shot of the period almost halfway through the period as he picked up a turnover at center ice and beat Lallier with a hard snapper from the high slot.
The third period was all Whalers. The shots were close with the Whalers outshooting the Nords 9-7, but the Nordiques shots were all low quality, from the outside and Lallier was there to turn them away.
With the game tied mid-way through the 3rd period commissioner McDermott took a slashing penalty that changed the game, setting up the game winning powerplay goal. In all reality, as the Whalers took control on the delayed penalty, McDermott & the Nords probably could have been called for an additional 2 or 3 penalties as the Whalers dominated puck possession and pressed for a goal.
Dillon "Fierce" Pierce scored the eventual game winner on the ensuing powerplay as he took a nice feed from Ryan "Dental Floss" Foss and beat Turner with a hard wrister. Sam Bailey capped the scoring with an empty netter and the Whalers celebrated into the wee hours of the night.
