Whalers & Nordiques battle for 3rd
ODDS: | EVEN |
OVER/UNDER: | 8 Goals |
Ahhhh, this should be a great game to watch. The Nordiques & Whalers are separated by 1 point in the standings. The Whalers & Nordiques have split the season series 2 games apiece. The Whalers have outsocred the Nordiques by one goal in those 4 games (18-17). Both teams have had struggles all season long scoring goals and stopping them to boot. The Nordiques are -33 and the Whalers -22.
Last time these two teams faced off the Nordiques squeeked out a 4-3 victory. The Nord's goaltender Johnny "Temper Tantrum" Turner was the 3rd star with 27 saves and the win and both Roger "The Drill" Phillips(Nordiques) & James "The Killer" Kerrigan(Whalers) were the first and second stars for popping in a pair of goals apiece.
Vegas says this one goes to a shootout. Kenny was really good on Sunday night, which usually means he's garbage on Tuesday, but I'm not sure that theory really works.
My professional opinion...Whalers win 5-4.
Nordiques Lock #3 Seed with 8-3 Bashing of Whalers
This game had huge playoff implications as the #3 Nordiques hosted the #4 Whalers. With a win, the Whalers would hold sole ownership of the #3 seed and avoid the Playoff Play-In between the #4 & #5 teams.
This was actually a great game through the first two periods before the Whalers fell apart and the Nordiques potted five goals in the third period to seal the victory. The Whalers did own a 3-1 lead with just under 5 minutes to play in the second, but a turnover and a missed call by the referees seemed to deflate the Whalers. The missed call came with 35 seconds to play when Roger "The Dentist Drill" Phillips fed Jordy "McBreakaway" McGee for a breakaway goal. The only problem was that the play seemed to be about 3 feet off-sides...at least from this Nordique's perspective, but I was 25 feet in the wrong direction. The Whalers put up a fight, but the referees didn't agree and the goal was not overturned.
Things were not looking good for the Nordiques as they fell behind 3-1 late in the 2nd period behind a pair of Tom "The Craponator" Crapser goals. But the Nordiques quickly jumped back into things and end the second period with all the confidence in the world.
Offensively it was a great night for the Nordiques as 6 of their 8 skaters registered points and all six recording at least 2. Jordy "McBreakaway" McGee lead the way yet again with two goals and two assists followed by forward turned defenseman Pierce "Mayhem" Mayhew scoring the hat trick. Poli "The Nightmare" Nightengale was the un-sung hero, seeing as he is not a big goal scorer but netted a pair of huge goals in this one.
Due to a locker room bug, the Nordiques were riding a VERY short bench and had to play 3 defenseman and 5 forwards.
GOAL SCORING RECAPS:
NORDIQUES 1-0 - Kelly "The Mouth" Park forced a turnover at the tops of the circles and the puck goes to Greg
"The Butcher" Marsh. Marsh threw a softie on net and it went under Kenny "The Grey One" Lallier. Soft goal, one that Kenny probably wishes he had back.
WHALERS 1-1 - Gary "The Pearl" Laperle threw the puck in front and Tommy Crapser batted it out of the air and into the net. REALLY?!!?? It was a beaut of a goal, great hand-eye coordinationk.
WHALERS 2-1 - Crapser struck again by finding a loose puck in front and throwing it along ice past Johnny "Temper Tantrum" Turner.
WHALERS 3-1 - Point shot from Laperle, Park misplayed it and Dillan "Fierce" Pierce who was all alone in front redirected it 5-hole past Turner.
NORDIQUES 2-3 Pierce "Mayhem" Mayhew splits the defense and beats Lallier with a quick shot.
NORDIQUES 3-3 - Possibly offsides(definitely), sweet backhand sauce from near boards by Roger "The Dirty Dentist Drill" Phillips to Jordy McGee breaking in all alone, backhand to forehand move and threw it in along ice. Beautiful goal.
NORDIQUES 4-3 - Poli "The Nightmare" Nightengale gets a drop pass from Roger Phillips, throws a 30 foot snipe high glove.
NORDIQUES 5-3 - Mayhew whiffs and the puck ends up on McGee's stick who then hits Mayhew on the backdoor.
NORDIQUES 6-3 - Marsh forces turnover, gets shot, Nightmare backhands the rebound up over Lallier's right pad and in.
NORDIQUES 7-3 - McGee blocks a point shot with his shin pads, breaks in all alone on Lallier, backhand to forehand again and throws puck up and over Lallier's outreached pad.
NORDIQUES 8-3 - Mayhew carries puck in on Power Play, shoots, gets his own rebound to the left of Lallier and lightly flips the puck over pad.

Yes, I am saying we will beat up on the Nords. tonight.. Good to see your competitive side vocal on gameday Z. All of us that ARE skating tonight, are pumped for this one too. But beating up on us? Historically our games have been close. I hope you guys are all there, and rested. That way there's no excuses. Unless the calls don't go your way, then I'm sure everyone will hear about it.
