Nordiques Survive Whalers 4-3

The Nordiques evened the season series with the Whalers at two games a piece with a 4-3 win despite being outshot 30-22. The Nords killed off 4 penalties and scored a key powerplay goal in the win. The Whaler's Kenny "Arthritis" Lallier was good, making some big saves, but the softie on the power play by Stuart "Rage Machine" Grande was the difference.

The Whalers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead late in the first period and this one looked like it was going to be another Whaler win. The first came when Jay "The Zamboni" Zanleoni took a pass on the near boards from defenseman Kevin "Santa" Clausen. Zanleoni skirted a Nordique's defenseman and went in on a partial breakaway, making a quick move and throwing the puck back across the grain on Turner, a beaut of a goal. James "Kerosene" Kerrigan is on fire and scored his 10th of the season by being in the right place at the right time when a point shot that never made it to Turner landed on Kerrigan's stick on the back post for the tap in.

Things looked bleak for the 'Diques at that point but a late period goal from Roger "The Dentist Drill" Phillips put them back in the game. Phillips goal came with 1:19 left in the first on a nice pass from Jordy "McBreakaway" McGee.

Phillips had a highlight reel goal to start the 2nd period after taking a drop pass from Kelly "The Mouth" Park at the Whaler's blue line. Phillips cut across the tops of the circles left to right, back into the high slot and beat Lallier with a quick forehand to backhand move before stuffing the puck under the old guy.

The Nordiques took the lead on the powerplay with 9:50 to play in the second frame on a faceoff to Lallier's right. The Nord's Eric "Special K" Krivitzky won the face off to the boards where Park pushed the puck back to Stuey "Rage Monster" Grande fired a quick high snapper on net that caught Lallier napping, bounced up in the air, landed in the crease and slow rolled back before sputtering out just over the goal line.

The Nordiques killed off another penalty to close out the second period and carried their 3-2 lead into the final period.

The Nordique's had to kill off an early period hooking penalty on Stuey Grande and then added a goal shortly after on a tip by Jordy McGee. The tip came on a slapper from the point off the stick of Brian "Red Beard" Racicot.

Another mid-period penalty kill was required by the Nordiques to maintain the lead and as the period carried on, the pressure by the Whalers deepened. The Nordiques were up to the task, but when the Whalers pulled their goaltender with just under 2 minutes to play and down by a pair of goals, they maintained control in the Nordiques end for the remainder of the game. A 45 second 4 on 3 battle along the near wall was finally pushed out to the Clausen at the point by Zanleoni. Clausen's point shot hit a body in front where the Nordiques were out numbered and the rebound once again landed on Kerrigan's stick. Kerrigan pulled the puck to his back hand and as he was falling fired a backhander past Turner to bring the Whalers back to within a goal and 36 seconds to play

The Whalers brought the puck into the Nordiques zone for the final 30 seconds, but weren't able to generate any scoring chances and the Nordiques improved to 5
