Cardigan Scores 2 Shorties in the Third, Win 8-5

The reigning UVHL Champion Whalers walked into the rink on cloud 9. They had proven to the world that David can beat Goliath, and they were ready for the next chapter in their franchise's bedazzled notebook.

Cardigan is the new kid on the block. Nobody knew who they really were or what they were capable of, but they stepped up to the champs and shoved their collective faces in the dirt. Cardigan showed skill, endurance and patience in their 8-5 win, not to mention that there was a bit of clutch in their game as they turned a shorthanded 1-goal lead late in the game into a three goal lead.

This game looked like it was going to be a lopsided victory when Cardigan stormed out to a 3-0 lead in the first 10 minutes. Player of the Week nomination Owen Carpino netted 4 goals, scoring two f the first three goals. The first came at 9:23 when Carpino roofed one over Lallier's glove from the near side, followed by a Ryan Sinclair blistering wrister along the ice just 22 seconds later. Carpino tipped in an Andrew Flaherty shot with 4:50 to put the Whalers in a deep 3-0 hole.

Cardigan continued their dominance, ringing two posts in 7 seconds shortly after, followed by Jay "The Zamboni" Zanleoni falling on his ass for the 3rd time in the period.

"Jumbo" Joe Gaudet brought his shovel and single-handedly dug the whalers out of the hole and back into the game, scoring a pair of goals before the buzzer ended the first frame. For the first goal, Gaudet made a great pass to Scotty "Sugar" Shaw who broke in all alone, fired one of the weakest shots in the history of the UVHL which was easily kicked out by Matty "Tazzy" Albertazzi. Gaudet stormed in, fought off a Cardigan defenseman and deposited the puck in the net. Gaudet's second came off a snapshot with just 18 seconds to play in the first.

END OF THE FIRST: Cardigan 3, Whalers 2

Graham Gauthier gave Cardigan a two goal lead again from defenseman Bryant Harris, only to see the Whalers storm back with the next three goals, from three different players. Gary "The Pearl Necklace" Laperle took a Chucky "Sticks" Gaede slapshot in the ass, only to see the puck drop onto the blade of his stick for the goal and then Shaw scored his second of the night on a quality drop pass from Woody Redpath to end the period in a 4-4 tie.

END OF THE SECOND: Cardigan 4, Whalers 4

The Whalers came out flying in the third period, carrying the play for the first five minutes. That dominance was encapsulated by a goal from Chucky Gaede as he let a wrister from the high slot rip through Albertazzi's 5-hole.

Despite the elation the Whalers felt about digging out of a 3-0 hole to finally lead in the game, things went down hill....and fast. A power play goal by none other than Carpino tied the game with 7:28 to play and Ryan "Sink" Sinclair took the lead after curling off the far boards and burning Kenny "LaOldTimer" Lallier like an Irishman on the equator with a snapper from the tops of the circles.

Down a goal, with under two minutes to play and Cardigan's captain, Ryan Sinclair, took a penalty...a well timed penalty that allowed his team to score two shorthanded goals in the last 1:15 to blow the hinges of the door and put the game out of reach for the Whalers. Those goals came from Timmy LeRoy & Carpino.

END OF REGULATION: Cardigan 8, Whalers 5
