Quarterfinal #1 - Dead River vs. Brewers
This will be an even battle if everyone shows up. Both teams can upset just about anyone in the next round, but they have to face each other first. Will Crowson and Feiden have a goalie's duel? Perhaps. Will Poirier hook Pattison as the big winger crashes the net? Probably. Will the top lines make the difference? Most likely. I think that if Pattison, Duggan, Golden and Cashman have their A-games on display then it will be possible for Dead River to win. However, the physical syle and more consistent team game of the Brewers will be hard to match, and I am therefore giving the Brewers the slight edge, but can't really give them odds to win because we're probably looking at overtime or a shootout for either squad to advance to the semis. Good luck to both teams and have fun, cuz its PLAYOFF TIME, Baby!
The Dead River runs through the Brewery...9-3.
Dead River flexed their muscles tonight by thumping the Brewers nine to three as the two most penalized teams (134 PIMs) faced off in an epic battle. After a close first period, Dead River put this one out of reach in the last two frames, outscoring the Brewers 7-1. Evan "Almighty" Duggan broke the tie in the second with a pair of goals and Robbie "Pattycakes" Pattison added a hat trick in the third just for good measure. Dead River received a solid performance from their pipe protector Greg "Furry" Feiden who was stellar after a typical slow first period, turning away 21 shots on the night.
All four tallies in the first period came off of rebounds or loose pucks in the crease. Dead River's Alexandra "Big Z" Zagaria got things started in the 4th minute after firing a quick shot into the chest of the Brewer's goalkeeper Matty "The Crow" Crowson. Crowson lost track of the puck which dropped in the crease for Tommy "Guns" Scull to chip in for the 1-0 lead. Keith "Garbage Goal" Lazarcyk lived up to his knickname after finishing off Chris Dubin's shot just over a minute later. Brian "Sludge" Smith put the Brewers up with his own garbage goal before "Slick" Rick Hughes tied the game up with 3:21 to play in the period, jamming home a Jason "Loose Cannon" Loomis rebound.
END OF THE FIRST: Brewers 2, Dead River 2
This looked like a very promising game after the first period...intense playoff hockey with a good flow, but Dead River was about to open things up. Rumor has it that Brewer's captain Garren "teed Penalty" Poirier read a poem in-between periods entitled "Mud-Season & Flowers" that was so sensitive and filled with love, that his team completely forgot how to play hockey.
Duggan opened things up on the power-play, jumping into the offense from his defensive position and breaking in on Crowson all alone for the go-ahead goal. "Mean" Dean Cashman put Dead River up 4-2 with 10:31 to play after adding his own garbage goal just 3:39 into the period. From there it was all downhill for the Brewers as Dead River's superior puck movement and confidence controlled the game. Duggan and Loomis added goals to put Dead River up by 4 goals at the end of 2 periods.
END OF THE SECOND: Dead River 6, Brewers 2
Pattison scored all three goals for Dead River in the third, the first coming on a beautiful backdoor pass from Chris Warrington at 11:59, quickly followed up with an unassisted goal 41 seconds later after picking off a pass in the Brewer's zone.
Chris "Doobie" Dubin made a last ditch effort to get his team back in the game with a snipe at 7:11 before Pattison closed out the scoring on the night, making it 9-3 from Scull & Duggan.
FINAL: Dead River 9, Brewers 3
Dead River manhandled the Brewers after readjusting their game plan after a tight first period. Duggan was stellar with a pair of goals and an assist while supporting his goaltender with solid defense, followed by Robbie Pattison adding a trio of goals late to put the Brewers out of their misery.

Look at the season showdown. Dead heat head-to-head. Brewers have 19 goal for and Dead River 21. Only a two goal differential. Should be a close one. One goal either way. 4-3 maybe even OT?! What do you think? Garrentee Killington, VT

I predict I cough the puck up at least two times in my zone and Pattison takes advantage...just a prediction...? vtdownhiller , AL

As every game in the Uvie it comes down to goaltending...I say Brewer's 6-4. Garren will not cough up the puck but he will hook and try to haul down Pattison at least twice. kpark Quechee, VT

| Tough call...Mar 28th, 2011 04:20 PM IN RESPONSE TO:BY: vtdownhiller As every game in the Uvie it comes down to goaltending...I say Brewer's 6-4. Garren will not cough up the puck but he will hook and try to haul down Pattison at least twice. Hmmm, this one could get ugly. Last year, the Brew Crew won the Whalen Cup behind some over the top aggressive and borderline dirty play mixed with a large scoop of offensive talent.
This year, the Brewers will bring that ove the top aggressive play, but seem to be lacking that sweet sugary scoop of offensive talent.
Without me on Defense to turn the puck over, the Brewers stand a chance, but I'm still going to go with Dead River...5-3. hkydoc WRJ, VT

| See you in the scrimmage, Brewers. Mar 30th, 2011 02:12 PM
This isn't the kind of rematch I wanted with the Brewers to end this season... I would have preferred to meet in the Whalen Cup Final again. Regardless, I'm puting up a case of beer for our 2 game series. Lets have some fun to close out this season, eh.
