Brewers Look For Redemption Against Nordiques
ODDS: | Nordiques by 3 goals |
OVER/UNDER: | 9 goals |
The last time the Nordiques & Brewers faced off, the Brewers were slaughtered 10-4 on opening night. Are the Nordiques that Good, the Brewers that BAD, or somewhere in between? I think the Brewers were that bad, THAT night. Since opening night the Brewers have cleaned up their defensive zone and found a groove, winning 2 of their last 3 including a 5-4 loss to undefeated Tuck.
The Nordiques are a very respectable 3-1-1 with a 10-2 loss to Tuck & a shootout loss last week to a solid Gamblers squad. They have scored an amazing 38 goals in 5 games, while letting up 28 compared to 15 GF & 26 GA for the Brewers.
Crowson has been outstanding lately for the Brewers, and Turner is slowly but surely coming back to form for the Nordiques...that isn't a slight against you JT, just the cold hard facts that you aren't a 5.60 gaa type of goaltender, but more of a 3.5 - 4.00 gaa. I just had to clarify that so Turner didn't jump off a bridge...he is very very very sensitive, and a bit crazy, but how many goaltenders do you know that aren't.
This game will come down to two things, the depth of the bench for the Brewers & the goaltenders. The Nordiques will arrive at the rink with two full lines and tons of energy, and if the Brewers aren't prepared, they will be run into the ground late in the game. The goaltenders will be a huge factor, and if either team can get to one of them early, it will be a game changer.
Nordiques SHOULD take this one, 6-3, but these Brewers lost a close one to Tuck who stomped the Nordiques in week 3.
Mayhew Sparks Nordiques with 4 Goals in 7-3 Win Over Brewers
The pre-game picks say it all, 100%(8 of 8) picked that the Nordiques would win this one, and they were right, 7-3 win for the puke green & yellow. The Nordiques were powered by their new "WASP" line of Pierce "Mayhem" Mayhew, Jordy "McBreakaway" McGee & Brian "The Beard" Racicot. The WASP line are all graduates of Woodstock High School and played for the Woodstock Wasps. Leading the way was "Mayhem" Mayhew with 4 goals on the night, including the hat trick early in the second period to break the game open.
The Brewers played the Nordiques tight in the first, holding the game scoreless and even outshooting the Nords 13-11. Both netminders were called upon in the first to make huge saves. It looked as though the Nordique's Johnny "Temper Tantrum" Turner & the Brewer's Matty "The Eagle" Crowson were locked into a goaltenders duel. The only statistical sidenote of the first came off of a Nordique's penalty to Kelly "The Mouth" Park with only 7 seconds left in the period that would end up being integral in this game.
END OF THE FIRST: DOUBLE GOOSE EGGS
Park's "timely" penalty late in the first set the stage for a quick shorthanded strike just 17 seconds into the second period as McGee pushed the center ice faceoff forward and hit "Mayhem" Mayhew with a backdoor pass. "I just take penalties at the right times. I had a GOOD feeling that we could open the scoring with a shorthanded goal." said Park of his Interference penalty.
Park helped set up the next goal less than 2 minutes later as he picked up a puck in the neutral zone, cut across the Brewer's blue line only to be leg tripped by Chris Johnson. With a delayed call pending and Park laying on the ice like a beached whale, Roger "Jerry Curl" Phillips picked up the loose puck and hit Ian "The Grin" Coates crashing the net for a tip in past Crowson, and a 2-0 lead.
Mayhew followed up with a pair of goals, 22 seconds apart at 11:27. Both goals, and all 3 of Mayhews to this point were directly assisted by his new best friend Jordy McGee. "I love Jordy, he's like a stupid little brother that I don't have to pass to, but keeps giving me the puck." recalled Mayhew of the game. In all reality, McGee garners so much attention from his opponents, leaving his linemates wide open in most cases. The red bearded step child of the WASP line, Racicot, also assisted on both of Mayhew's goals.
The Brewer's got finally broke through on Turner with 8:18 to play in the period when Cort Pomeroy picked up a rebound in front off of a shot from defensive gem, Danny "Mountain of Man" Charrette. Racicot put the Nords back up by 4 goals with 7:17 to play from Coates & Tommy "the Minister of Defense" Dakai.
The highlight of the night was a Brewer's 3 on 2 that saw Garren "-teed Penalty" Poirier hit Pomeroy who then fed Alfonse "The Fonz" Sorrentino streaking down the far side. "The Fonz" was as cool as can be as he took the pass and beat Turner through his gaping 5-hole as he traversed the crease. It was a great shot by Fonzie, quick release and perfectly placed.
END OF THE SECOND: Nordiques 5, Brewers 2
The Brewers made things interesting in the third with a Brock "Bubba" Barton goal at 9:04, as they temporarily controlled play and cut the lead to 5-3. Cort Pomeroy assisted on this goal as well, giving him a point on all 3 goals for the Brewers.
The Nordiques kept pressing and scored 2 unassisted goals from "Mayhem" Mayhew & "Jerry Curl" Phillips. Phillips timely goal came with 18 seconds to play and a 6-2 lead, which sparked some comments from the Brewers. "Hey, I'm a dentist, I never take my hand off the drill. I don't care how much they are bleeding or how close they are to death. The jobs not done until that buzzer rings, or there is not pulse....either or, go hard or go home." Said Phillips as he applied some Soul Glow to his Jerry Curls after the game.
END OF REGULATION: Nordiques 7, Brewers 3
The Nordiques are a powerhouse, and the Brewers felt it. With two solid lines, they are a team to watch. The Brew Crew on the other hand has some work to do. They played great hockey in the first, but let things get out of hand in the middle frame. They are in dire need of some youth & energy if they want to keep Crowson off the ledge.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I WILL NOT SCORE A GOAL IN ANY PERIOD TONIGHT! BAM!
This should be a good game. Crowson has been on fire, Turner has looked moderately better.
Time will tell. | |
