Brewers Come From Behind, Beat Whalers in Shootout 3-2.

Both the Brewers & Whalers started the season off on the wrong foot, 0-2-0, and wanted to turn things around. Both teams have some good core elements, but just haven't been able to put things together yet. The Brewers problems have been a short bench and lack of defense while the Whalers have problems playing a full 45 minutes. Both teams resolved some issues tonight and had strong defensive games.

The Whaler's Kenny "The Lamp" Lallier was on fire tonight turning away 32 of 34 shots, many of them big saves. Lallier made some life changes for tonights game, including the HUGE switch from single ply toilet paper to pillow-tufted super-soft triple-ply, Lallier also started using a stronger bonding denture glue, switched to whole grain bread and most importantly switched away from the new bulky pads to his old pads. The latter making the biggest difference in his game.

The BrewCrew got things started in the first at 11:17 with a goal from rookie Chris "Doobie" Dubin. Doobie, who started the game with brand new shoulder pads before taking them off due to the fact that he realized he looked ridiculous with shoulder pads in a non-check league. Dubin took a pass from fellow rookie "Basketball" Cort Pomeroy & Garren "The Hook" Poirier. The Whalers responded with two QUICK goals just 15 seconds apart to take the 2-1 lead. The first came off of a Jason "Bling" GramBLING snap shot that beat Matty "The Eagle" Crowson through his gaping 5-hole. That 5-hole was apparently still wide open 15 seconds later when Zach "A-Bomb" Aher took an indirect pass off the near boards from Nicky Hall, cut around a Brewer's defenseman and beat Crowson through his wickets from the hashmarks.

In Crowson's defense, those were the ONLY 15 seconds of his game that weren't stellar.

END OF THE FIRST: Whalers 2, Brewers 1

The second period saw zero action in terms of scoring, but both goaltenders stood tall for their respective teams. The Whalers killed off 2 penalties including an abbreviated 5 on 3 to maintain their one goal lead, but the most interesting play in the period came when the Brewer's Garren "Capn' Penalty" Poirier took a penalty for high sticking a Whaler's forward. In the process of the high sticking, he lost his stick, but was able to track down the Whaler's player with the puck and horse collar him and whipping him to the ice, racking up a 4 minute penalty kill from his Brewers who were down 2-1 at the time. The Brew Crew successfully killed off the powerplay, mainly behind the big play of Crowson.

END OF THE SECOND: Whalers 2, Brewers 1

The Brewers turned it on in the 3rd, maybe due to the fact that the Whaler's true colors show in the 3rd as they slowed down and started making mistakes. Cort Pomeroy tied the game at 10:28 from Brian Smith. Pomeroy's play tonight was a huge contributing factor in the game, as he also assisted on the Brewer's other goal. The remainder of the play saw Lallier make a couple of huge saves as the ice was tilting a bit.

END OF REGULATION: Game Tied @ 2

Crowson was awesome in the shootout stopping all 3 shooters for the Whalers ("Bling" Grambling, Nate Aldrich & Scotty "Too Hotty" Shaw). Lallier was also very good stopping 2 of 3(Chris "Big" Johnson & "Basketball" Cort Pomeroy) but couldn't match the nasty move that Billy "The Kid" Fletcher through at him for the game winning goal.

In the end, the two bottom teams battled hard. The Whalers slowed down....but they always do. The Brewers were riding a short bench and had to take on the defensive liability sub in Kelly "The Mouth" Park, but still managed to pull out the win. It'll be interesting to watch the progression of these two teams throughout the season.
