ODDS: | Gamblers by 2 goals |
OVER/UNDER: | 7 goals |
What can be expected for the match up between last season's champs and the silent team we have heard almost nothing from since the puck last dropped? Surprises. I am sure of that! Both teams will be different in terms of rosters: the Gamblers are having trouble recruiting players just like last season, but they pulled it off last year for their first Whalen Cup; the Brewers being the strong silent types seem to have their cards close to their chest as the season begins. Who will actually be there for the drop of the first puck in Season 7's first tilt? I dunno, but there will be 2 refs and a scorekeeper there to keep track of the stats in a game that is hard to pin down in terms of what to expect. I'd have to go with the current Whalen Cup champs by a goal, so my prediction is: Gamblers 4, Brewers 3, and a tie between Dan Charette and McD for the highest bodyfat percentage in the UVHL's Biggest Loser weigh-in!
GAMBLERS START SEASON RIGHT IN 2009
The Gamblers started their inaugural season last year with a 3 or 4 game losing streak only to finish with the best record in the league. Now the defending Whalen Cup Champs are looking to repeat with the rest of the UVHL gunning for them! This first game of the 2009-10 season was lightly attended by both rosters as the Gamblers had 9 skaters to the Brewers 7, but that didn't stop either team from busting their asses all night. Gamblers rookie Allison Malcolm didn't appear to lose a single face-off all game, and had her Brewers opponents frustrated. By the end of the game they were joking about their extremely poor chances of even touching the puck, let alone winning the face-off. The MMA line of Will Meyer, Matt Marrazzo, and Dan Ammel combined for 7 points continuing their torrid scoring pace from last season. The Brewers had a rookie of their own in net, and Matt Crowson kept the Gamblers offense frustrated sending every member of the MMA line away shaking their head at least once during the game with spectacular and solid saves. Another rookie made his first UVHL appearance on the Brewers roster in this game, Aaron Mancuso, and he played a solid 3 periods with a short bench and was ready for post-game libations after it was all over. The Brewers were missing all 4 of their Dartmouth med students for this one, presumably due to prostate exam volunteer rotations...
The first period was evenly played and began with almost 4 minutes of scoreless hockey until Ammel scored the first goal of Season 7 at 11:11 from Marrazzo on the PP with Jason Yehle in the Brewers box for hooking. The Brewers tied it up at 8:25 when Brian Smith solved Jered Condon (if that is even remotely possible...) assisted by Brock Barton and Al Sorrentino. Marrazzo put the puck in the net at 5:10 from Meyer and defenseman Scott Fraser, but the Brewers were still fresh and tied it at 2-2 to end the period on Smith's second of the night on a rebound off of defenseman Dan Charette's point shot.
After giving up 2 relatively saveable goals in the first, Jered Condon put on a goaltending show of his own for the rest of the game when challenged by the Brewers. The rest of the scoring was all Gamblers, who balanced out the offense with 2 goals in each period. Meyer scored at 11:23 of the second from linemate Marrazzo, and then it was Scott Davis on a breakaway from Mike Harrington and Allison Malcolm with 6:02 left in the period. Hooking penalties were doled out to the Brewers Garren Poirier and the Gamblers Jason Young in the second, and to Marrazzo in the third out of frustration. Third period scoring plays by the Gamblers were Davis again from Malcolm at 6:20 and Marrazzo with a beautiful individual effort off a forces turnover for an unassisted goal with a mere 1:33 to go.
Final Score: Gamblers 6, Brewers 2
Final Tally: Check the Boxscores section, eh! Don't forget to vote for the Long Trail UVHL Player of the Week!
Final Analysis: The Gamblers were too deep on the bench for the Brewers to sustain pressure for 3 full periods, but the game was very even during the first period before the Brewers ran out of gas. Both goalies played well, and Condon shook of the first period rust to keep a 2 period shutout. The MMA line looks to terrorize opposing defenders and goalies once again this season. Allison Malcolm is a force to be reckoned with!

| I can't wait to ref this one! Oct 12th, 2009 07:13 PM
This should be a good one to don the stripes for. It'll be great to get back into reffing with these two fast pace teams. Minus that dirty bastard, Poirier.

| Bleu Cheese is multi-purpose! Oct 12th, 2009 09:17 PM
Nice to see Garren knows the many benefits of Bleu Cheese! It is also good for athletes foot, genital warts, and anal fistulas. Garren, is yours healing up okay? Bleu cheese directly from France is the best for that one as they can be particularly foul smelling and full of pus.
See you on the ice! Keep your stick to yourself! The Dark Canuck Fairlee, VT

| Ahh, the Bleu! Oct 13th, 2009 08:32 AM
That is fucking sick McD...As being one of the regular "writters" as J-Roc Jerod Condon put it, I'll agree to say that this game will likely be a good one. Not sure WHAT will happen, as at least a bunch of guys will no doubt have to get a few skates under their belt to shake off the rust. I for one have played like 6-7 times, and I still have a lot to do. I AM impressed with the turnout we've had in pre-season. A lot of the "Core" Nordiques, as well as the newcomers have made it out regularly. Nice job on the website Kelly, looks great! GO NORDS GO!!!! The Dark Canuck Fairlee, VT

| Need a ref. Oct 13th, 2009 09:41 AM
Hey guys, we are down a ref for the late game tonight. Looking to see if anyone playing in this game would throw on some stripes with Hadley for the 9:20pm game. It pays $35.
