Nords outwork Avs 7-2 in solid UVHL match-up Feb 6th
This game started with several unknowns. How would the 1-1-1 season series between these teams be decided by this game? Would Bayley and Meyer merely match each other's offense and then the Avs other snipers would make the difference against the one-trick pony Nords? How would JT fare after he blundered and forgot his own goalie mask at home while wearing Hadley's mask, possibly not being able to see or pick up angles like he was used to? How would the Nords solve the long-legged and tall Bartline in the Avs net that never leaves much room for a puck to find its way through? Could the Nords keep it together on the bench without their suspended leader and captain Tao Smith?
The first period scoresheet started with a penalty to Avs D Kevin Calder for a trip at 12:30, but it resulted in a shorty for teammate Christian Isaac who scored a beauty at 12:19 only 11 seconds into the PK from linemate and center Nick Bayley. Luckily for the Nords they still had 1:49 on the PP and at 11:50 they tied it up on Will Meyer's PPG from Ian Bartrum and defenseman Shawn McDermott. Isaac got his second nice goal of the period at 10:02 to give the Avs a 2-1 lead from Al Sorrentino and Chris Johnson, and JT looked out of place and confused with strange angles and a squeezed melon in Hadley's helmet. JT owed his captain a debt of gratitude since Smith trekked all the way to JT's house to retrieve his mask from the basement, and returned with the proper melon protector mid-way through the first and JT started to look, and play, like himself. JT is intense, and gets focused for games, but there was no way he was going to go it very old school like Johnny Bower in the pre-Jacques Plante era without the mask. Avs D Sean McCabe got sent for tripping at 3:57 and Bartrum tied the game at 3:15 on the PP from Meyer and Adrien Melrose, who was really starting to find his stride on the blueline with his new team.
The second period started with a 2-2 tie, and the action and effort was evident at both ends. Bayley was working hard defensively, as well as doing his usual offensive creativity, but he got nabbed for two conssecutive penalties. The first was for slashing at 14:31, and as I recall it was a retaliation for a missed call against Bayley's neutral zone pursuer. The second penalty was for elbowing at 9:06 as it got even more competitive and chippy, but his one cost the Avs and the Nords got yet another PPG at 8:49 on Ian Coates' marker from Greg Marsh and Mike O'Neil to put the Nords up 3-2. Kelly Park took a hooking minor and went to the Nords box at 5:55, but JT rejected all Avs shots to keep the one goal lead going into the third. The Avs killed of another Nords PP chance after Hank Bouchard ws nabbed for hooking at 0:58, and 4 of the 8 penalties in this game were in this period.
It was a one-goal game with 15 minutes to play, but this period ended up being all Nords. JT was hot and rejected all chances generated by the Avs, and the Nords exploded for 4 unanswered goals even though Bartline was incredibly solid in the Avs net. Adrein Melrose punced on an Avs clearing attempt at his blueline and his point shot deflected off an Av defender's shin pad to go over Bartline's shoulder for the HUUUUUGE unassisted insurance goal. Half the period went by with end-to-end action, no penalties, and lots of sick saves. Players were going back to the bench sucking some serious wind, and it didn't stop until Mike O'Neil jumped on a goal mouth pass from Meyer and Marsh who worked hard to get the puck out in front at 3:56 for a 3-goal lead. Coates got his second of the game at 2:20 from Park and McDermott and the result was no longer in doubt. McCabe took another penalty at 2:11 for hooking, and on the PP Meyer scored his second on an unassisted effort to finish it 7-2 Nords.
