Storm Kings' Adam Hogg singlehandedly destroys (former?) #1 Nords
No excuses will be offered for the loss by the Nordiques as the win was earned fair and square by the Storm Kings. Each team had 9 players, but it took only one to knock the Nords off their pedestal atop the UVHL rankings. Now, don't get me wrong here, the Nords are still in first place overall with an 8-2-1 record and 77% win percentage, BUT are they currently the best team in the UVHL? Methinks not. I must give that honor to the Storm Kings at the moment. This imaginary title may shift to Tuck once they return from break, because on paper they have the strongest and deepest line-up, have a 75% win percentage, and the most potential if everyone shows up. In any case, this will all be decided in the Whalen Cup Playoffs so it is mere conjecture at this point.
The Nords held off the Storm Kings for about half a period until Artie Stout drew first blood walking in from the point to score at 7:53 from Dean Cashman and Adam Hogg. Nords rostered alternate Dan Coffey, in for emergency duty, was nabbed for holding at 5:54. Hogg scored his first of many at 3:28 from Sean Coakley and Tom Scull. Coffey went to the box again at 2:51 for hooking, and Stout scored on the PP at 2:01 from Scull and Hogg to end the period 3-0 Kings.
In the second Will Meyer pulled the Nords within 2 at 12:52 on an unassisted goal classic Meyer-style with hustle, speed, and heart. Hogger answered quickly at 12:12 from Cashman and Scull. Meyer set up Mike O'Neil at 7:28 to make a game of it with the score 4-2 Storm Kings, but the Nords were getting tired chasing the fleet of foot Adam Hogg around their end, and watching the superior puck control and passing of the Storm Kings as they worked the puck around the Nords' end. The Nords were getting dizzy, and then Hogg struck again with an unassisted goal at 5:33. They had their chance to come back as Stout went to the Kings box at 5:17 for bodychecking, and then Scull made it a 5-on-3 going in for holding at 3:50, but the Nords blew it and Hogger stole the puck and scored an unassisted shorty at 3:38. JT almost exploded, spewed some expletives, and we can't blame him as he had little help. The Storm Kings went up 7-2 with 1:41 left in the period as Goose Gosselin sped around Fat Bastard down low to jam one in past JT off of nice feeds from Stu Close and Scull, who got his 4th assist.
The third period was the ultimate demise of the Nordiques. Not only were they defeated on the scoreboard, they were defeated in spirit. Hogger scored again at 10:31 from linemates Coakley and Cashman to make it 8-2. With Stout in the box again at 9:45 for roughing, the Nords had a chance to regain some pride, but had their nose rubbed in it as Coakley got not one, but TWO shorthanded goals on the same shift, possibly a UVHL record. Coakley was fed by Hogger at 9:29 for the first of two, then by Close and Hogger at 9:04 and the Nords were officially done. A 10 goal spanking with more than half a period to play left the Nords frustrated, exhausted, and confused. JT needed therapy after the game with Dr. Sheehan to clear his head of all the visions of blasted pucks, bad defense, giveaways, and streaking Storm Kings. The only bright side was that Meyer and O'Neil didn't give up, and they scored a few late goals for pride, and the two connected 3 times in the last 6:59 starting with Meyer's second goal from O'Neil. Adam Hogg set a UVHL record with his 6th goal and 10th point at 4:45 from Coakley in an unbelievable performance and total destruction of the Nordiques practically singlehandedly. O'Neil scored his second at 3:52 from Meyer, and the all important second assist by Nords captain Tao Smith. Twenty seconds later Meyer completed the Hat Trick to keep moving up in the standings from Kelly Park and O'Neil.
