Nords improve to 8-1-1 at halfway point vs. Bruins.
The Nordiques have somehow found a way to stay on top, at least for now, of the UVHL's standings at the halfway point of the season. The Bruins have points in half of their games thus far, but remain in 5th place as they continue to search for their team game with many new faces and more talent overall compared to last season. Kelly Park was on D tonight, as was Nords leading scorer Will Meyer as several Nords defensive regulars were unavailable for this Tuesday night tilt. Shawn McDermott was the only card carrying defenseman, and was joined alongside by Park, and Ian Bartrum was paired-up with Meyer, and a new forward line of Marsh-Coates-Jones was created to go with the regular line of Willis-Smith-Nightingale.
The Bruins were without Jay Smith, Seth Warren, and missing Alec Jessiman on their blueline after his move south. Park proved his points would not be limited by playing D, and he walked in from the point off a feed from Willis to start the scoring at 12:14. Mike Harrington answered from the B's blueline at 8:40 to tie the game from Derek DeYoung and Don Powers. Meyer nailed a slapper into the top corner from his blueline past Hadley at 7:53 from Bartrum and Marsh. The penalty parade began at 6:52 of the first with Powers' interference minor, and then Park matched it with one of his own at 3:58. With the score 2-1 for the Nords, B's power forward Matt Marrazzo scored yet another highlight goal on an unassisted effort that saw him beat at least 2 Nords defenders and rifle a wrister over JT's shoulder for a tying goal at 14:18 early in the second. Marrazzo has been the B's most exciting player to watch, and the most difficult to defend this season. Nords F Greg Marsh capitalized on a forced turnover and answered with an unassisted goal of his own to give the Nords the 1-goal lead again at 12:39, and has been scoring with more frequency this season after winning the UVHL's Biggest Loser competition this off season. Matching minors were doled out to Mike Rooney and Kelly Park for roughing after an altercation in front of the Nords' net at 11:57. Nords winger Dan Jones forced neutral zone turnover and hustled in beating a B's defender and Hadley for the insurance goal at 8:12 that sealed the B's fate in this otherwise close game until that point.
Frustration set in a little, and there was a little bad blood, too, and the penalty brigade got into full swing. Derek DeYoung got nabbed for holding at 6:39 and the Nords PP capitalized at 5:19 after Park crept in from the point to the front of the net to score, assisted by Tao Smith, to make it 5-1 Nords. At 3:18 Powers got his second minor, this time for hooking, and the Nords finished their scoring on the PP again at 1:31 when Meyer went down low in the B's end from the point scoring his second from Coates and Marsh.
In the third it was all penalties, heckling, and no scoring. At 12:46 B's D Scott Fraser took a hook on Marshy up high on the shoulder to prevent the big winger from charging in for a goal at the B's blueline, and Marshy lost his temper and took exception on the play when his opponent had the only call. Marshy got 2 for roughing and 2 for unsportsmanlike and turned the man-advantage into a disadvantage in one fell swoop. He felt bad after the fact, and heard about it in the locker room afterwards, but in this league in a close game an undisciplined show like that can turn a game around in the wrong direction. Luckily the Nords killed off the potential momentum changer. Fraser then went to the box again at 8:59 for tripping, and soon afterwrds it was DeFelice for the same infraction at 4:19, but the B's PK stood strong and turned away all Nords opportunities. McDermott had two solid shots on net in this game, and Hadley's glove came up big both times, and several other times as well. JT kept his GAA hopes alive and was fundamentally solid and at times spectacular in his league leading 7th win. Late in the game matching minors went to Coates and Powers for roughing at 3:48, and Powers' third minor sent him home early.
