Nords end Kings win streak for sole posession of first on 11/7!
The Storm Kings entered this contest the hottest team in the UVHL at 4-1 by winning 4 of their last 5 after starting the season with a loss against the Nordiques. The Nords were also 4-1, but they lost in Week # 3 to the vastly improved Avs and offer no excuses for the blemish on their record. As the season cycle started over, both teams were looking forward to another re-match against a quality opponent. The line-ups were completely full with each team's regulars, so it came down to who played the best and who wanted it more for sole possession of first place. Kelly Park, playing "D" or something like it tonight, jammed in a rebound in tight after Ian Bartrum and Will Meyer made the pass and initial shot at 11:10 to give the Nords the 1-0 lead. Nords F Mike O'Neil went to the box at 8:03 for tripping, and JT stopped all Kings chances on the ensuing PP except for Adam Hogg's twisted wrister over D-man McDermott's arm and JT's shoulder that rifled hard off the outside of the right side of the crossbar to serve notice the Storm Kings came to play. A player listed as # 27 in the penalty column for the Storm Kings went to the box for interference at 4:39, but there was no # 27 (perhaps it was Murf # 22 or Hogger # 23...e-mail me & let me know who it was, eh). The Kingers shut down the Nords PP attempt. At one point Kings F Adam Hogg made an incredible play by lifting the stick of McDermott who was defending him in the slot and in the same motion deflected the point shot on purpose with his stick on the way back down right at JT. Not that McD played any higher than Sr. A in his days at Logan College of Chiropractic, but he has seen (and stopped) lots of great moves in his lengthly hockey career as a defensaman, but he had NEVER seen such a sweet move on a deflection like that before. EVER. He gave Hogger his due "I'm not worthy...I'm not worthy..." still in awe at the display of skill at a move he had never before seen. At the end of the period the Nords went shorthanded again, this time it was D Peter Otto guilty of holding at 1:11, perhaps due to the continued pressure by the Kingers. Will Meyer started the second period with a SHG at the tail end of the Otto minor with a phenominal individual effort going end-to-end after picking up the puck from JT (who gets the assist!) and 2 Storm King defenders hanging off of him and tucking the puck under Frenchy for an emotional goal and 2 goal lead at 14:15. Tom Scull got nabbed for holding at 12:05 and went to the King's box, but the Nords did not score on the PP. It was the Kings turn on the PP at 5:33 with Bartrum in the box for tripping, and yet again there was no PPG. Late in the second Nords F Dan Jones worked hard and went to the net and found a hole at 2:53 off of feeds from Mike O'Neil and Shawn McDermott to put the game firmly in the Nords hands with a 3-0 lead. Jonesey un-redeemed himelf at 14:16 of the third with a hooking call (he must have petered himself out charging in for the goal) when he used his stick and not his feet to subdue a Kinger in the neutral zone. The Nords fended off the Storm Kings potent attack, and the game really could have turned in the third in favor of the Kingers as they hit another post on the PP. JT was unfucking believable in net. He was diving, sprawling, squareing up to the shooters, challenging, nabbing pucks out of the air, freezing rebounds and directing rebounds out of harms way. What a game! Kudos to the Nords forwards who backchecked hard, played smart, got open and were there to pass to. Credit to the 4 Nords D who kept it simple, got the puck out, and protected the front of the net, and chipped in 3 points, too. Frustration set in a little, and Scully took an un-cool bodycheck penalty on Ian Coates at 12:53 on a non-threatening play at the half-boards when he smoked Coates into the boards with a hip-check. I can understand taking a bodychecking penalty to send a message to some asshole who is taking un-called liberties and is putting you or your teammates at risk (and have done so myself in fact) or knocking down someone in front in a 1-goal game to stop a legit scoring chance, but this was a little unnecessary and did not prevent a goal. But, hey, that's hockey. Been there, done that (and worse), and nobody was hurt and they all went to work the next day. The Kings went a perfect 3-for-3 on the PK, and then they scored a PPG at 7:01 on Scully's wicked slapper that deflected off someone in front and found a small hole between JT's pads and trickled in while Nords D Tom Dakai was in the box for hooking at 8:45, with assists going to super playmakers and post-hitters Adam Hogg and Sean Coakley to narrow the lead to 3-1. With half a period to go, and momentum finally on their side after solving a stellar JT, the Kings had a shot at the comeback, something that would not be out of the ordinary for them in the least. The game was put out of reach when Meyer got the insurance goal and his third point of the night at 4:23 from Nords captain Tao Smith and Kelly Park.
