Potter 2nd half domination of Smoke Eaters 10-3 on 4/13.
There was lots of scoring and lots of penalties in this one as the competitiveness of both squads was evident. Potter Construction looked wicked shaaaaap in their new black jerseys, and were even considerate to the Commish getting the same numbers put on the back of their jerseys, with one exception as Will 'The Thrill" Meyer was changed to #27 from #11, and now we won't get too confused when the Smoke Eaters and Potter play and all we see are #11's on the game sheet! The Smoke Eaters top line of Sinclair-Coakley-Cashman did not have enough support to keep up with Potter's lethal and deep attack from all three lines. However, veteran UVHL refs Carl Hatfield and Gary Laperle did justice to the stats once and for all giving out second assists on at least half of the goals scored - way to go refs! Teach those UVHL rookie refs how to do it properly, eh! Guest time and scorekeeper Jon Gillespie, former minor pro and UVHL Nordique and 2003-04 Whalen Cup shootout clinching goal scorer, was kept busy in this one. Hardworking Steve Lawe made his UVHL debut wearing #15 for the Smoke Eaters in this game. Sean Coakley started the scoring at 11:29 from Ryan Sinclair and Greg 'Goose' Gosselin. Marty White got his first of three consecutive penalties at 9:12 for high sticking. Josh Obar scored on the ensuing PP at 7:17 as time was running out from Bruce Hathorn. Sinclair found the back of the net at 2:49 to put his team back up by a goal from Mike Fitzgerald and Goose. Late in the first White high sticked Will Meyer in an attempt to stop a scoring chance by the speedy sniper and went to the box at 1:55 and wasn't happy about it. We've all heard it before, but if Marty REALLY wanted to hook Will hard, he would have (but didn't, of course). Hathorn scored 37 seconds into the PP to tie the game at 2-2 from Kevin Louzier and end a very even and competitive first period. Coakley started the second period leading by example and put his team up again at 14:04 scoring off an amazing feed by Sinclair off the half-boards after Sinclair dipsy-doodled to avoid some Potter defenders before finding Coakley in front. Dan McGee didn't like it, and continued his scoring ways tieing the game at 3-3 at 10:26 of the period from Louzier. Gino Riffle put Potter on top and...wait, that sounds too much like Brokeback Hockey, let me rephrase that...Gino Riffle put his team ahead for good with the second of 8 unanswered Potter goals at 8:29 from Kevin Guilbault. Marty continued his penalty streak at 6:17 of the second as he and Josh Obar both darted for a loose puck along the half boards in Potter's zone. Neither player was going to give an inch, and it might have been only because Obar got there a split second before White that caused Obar to be on the receiving end of a beautiful and graceful mid-air bodycheck (definitely NOT a gentle rub-out). White was pissed when he realized that the check was is third penalty in just over half the game and it sent him home upset that he could not continue playing the game he loves on this night. And of course, how can we forget what he said after the penalty? Of COURSE, Marty, if you really wanted to hit him hard, you would have (but didn't, right?). It WAS a nice hit, and considering that Marty doesn't wear any shoulder pads it was even nicer, and thankfully no one was hurt, Marty included, BUT this is a non-checking league and it wasn't cool. I could understand it if Obar crossed the line and deserved a bodycheck for an attitude adjustment, but in this case he didn't. However, I do have a feeling that if Marty had gotten there first that Obar might have been the person delivering the bodycheck...right, Mufasa? At 3:00 Riffle went to the box for hooking, but the Smokers did not score on the PP. With only 28 seconds in the period Meyer scored the insurance goal to make it 5-3 from Louzier. At the start of the third Gary Smith went to the box at 14:48 with an early penalty for tripping and the Eaters went on the PP again, so nobody can say that they didn't get their chances. However, Meyer scored an unassisted shorty at 14:18 to seal the deal for Potter with yet another clutch goal. Things got a little chippy at 12:57 as Sinclair went to the SE penalty box for roughing, and two minors were assessed to Potter's Josh Obar for roughiing and unsportsmanlike. Potter went down another player at 11:56 when Gilly was called for tripping, but Jake Obar and the Potter PK units shut down the potent PP of the Smoke Eaters. Meyer completed the Natural Hat Trick (I believe his third of the year) at 9:02 from Tom Crapser and Gilly. McGee continued his scoring streak with another at 8:08 from Hathorn and Louzier. Gilly added a goal to his two assists adn 7:17 from Hathorn and Louzier. Smith went to the box again at 5:52 for holding, but there was no PPG by the SE's. Hathorn got his playmaking on and earned his third first assist in a row at 0:22 setting up Louzier for a goal also assisted by McGee.
