Smoke Eaters bury the Leafs 7-5 on 3/23.

Sorry for the pun, eh, but it was the first headline that came to my mind. Perhaps that is telling about this particular author's intelligence and (lack of) talent for creative writing. I've probably used that same one before, so pardon my english because nobody said that there was going to be a test on it in hockey (right Mr. Heavisides?). This early test in the UVHL's Spring season saw the first face-off between the new and improved blue & white Leafs against the "newest" version of the red, white & black Storm Kings/Smoke Eaters. Even with a lighter bench the Smokers (sorry, I just can't bring myself to refer to them as the 'Eaters'...and I'm tired of typing two names all the frickin' time as well) competed hard against the full bench of the Leafs. There was no scoring in the first period, only three penalties doled out to the Leafs' Chris Gogan @ 8:38 for tripping, Alec Jessiman @ 4:08 for tripping, and to Mike Fitzgerald of the Smokers @ 3:11 for interference. Neither team could capitalize on the PP and Ken Lallier in the Leafs net and Dan French in the Smokers net turned away all chances. The only penalty of the second went to Leaf captain Sean Casavant at 12:22 for interference, and again no goals were scored. This game went over halfway without a goal until Mike Fitzgerald finally got a team on the board with his goal at 6:53 of the second from Tom Scull. A few minutes later the Leafs answered with a Fred Redden marker at 3:50 assisted by Alec Jessiman to tie the game at 1-1. Both teams scored less than 30 seconds apart in the final two minutes of the second now that the proverbial ice had been broken. Sean Coakley continued his scoring ways at 1:31 from linemate Dean Cashman only to have Don Powers score at 1:05 on an incredible individual effort to make it 2-2. The Smokers recaptured the momentum quickly and Cashman and Coakley combined again on Cashman's goal at 0:33 to take the Leafs off guard, and then Coakley scored an unassisted goal of his own with only16 seconds left in the second period to add insult to injury while the Leaf defenders were napping and still in shock of no longer being tied. Coakley made it two unassisted goals in a row completing the Hat Trick at 12:47 to make it 5-2. Greg Gosselin extended the Smokers' lead at 9:14 from Cashman and Fitzgerald, and a minute later Fitzgerald netted his second of the game and third point at 8:13 from Coakley and the score was 7-2 and the outlook was bleak for the Leafs. With 2:12 Cashman went to the box for roughing and the Leafs salvaged their pride scoring on the ensuing PP with 1:40 to go on Kyle Manny's goal assisted by Alec Jessiman with his second assist of the game. The Leafs went on a roll, unfortunately too late to make a difference, but they served notice that they were not to be take lightly and that they've got plenty of heart underneath the Leaf on their chests. Jason Loomis scored from Dave Riley with only 0:44 to go and then Doug Heavisides scored with 0:14 on the clock from Chris Gogan and Dave Riley.
