Potter handles Nordiques 5-1 on 3/23.
Hartford's Potter Construction hockey team and defending 2005 Mud League Champs faced off against the skeleton roster of the UVHL's 2006 Whalen Cup Champs in a battle of the Upper Valley's current hockey titleists. Potter had their full squad and played like they usually do - hard, fast, and like a well oiled machine, kinda like your first time alone with a Playboy mag (that one was for you, Hathorn), but I digress. Potter again looked and played like the team to beat, and the newest version of the Nords offered no excuses for the loss. In fact, the Nords played significantly better then they did in the Mud League season opener last Thursday, and there were sparks of chemistry and team play, but it couldn't be sustained against the aggressive forechecking and cycling of the Hartford & Lebanon boys from Potter. This game was even up through the majority of two periods, and Potter did not start to dominate until the latter half of the game as the shorter Nords bench started to feel the effects of fatigue. The Nords have lost regular defenseman Kevin Calder to an MCL sprain suffered over the weekend in the Storm Kings Classic Tournament, and Calder may be lost for the remainder of the UVHL's Spring season. Also missing for the Nords were "Twisted Steel" Greg Hadley (or is it Twisted Stool, I can't remember...) and puckhandling defenseman Dr. Drew Crapser, the near-sighted gynecologist (actually, Drew hasn't picked his primary specialty yet, but tells me he is currently doing field research in that particular area of expertise). Alas, I digress yet again! Now back to our second favorite subject: hockey. The only scoresheet stats from the first period were three penalties, none resulting in a PPG. First, it was Dave Willis of the Nords at 12:22 for tripping, then Dan Ammel at 10:25 for slashing, with the third penalty of the first period going to Potter's Gary Smith (last week's Player of the Week) for holding the stick at 3:17. No penalties were doled out in thte second, and it was very late in the period when Potter finally solved JT's heroics of the previous 7 or 8 minutes with a fluke point shot by Gino Riffle that got past JT on a screen in slow motion flipping end over end to send the game into the third with Potter leading 1-0. By this time the Nords were getting exhausted, but they were pleased with the level and quality of play of the game, and the fact that they were playing better together. However, it wasn't nearly enough to overcome the strong team game and effort of Potter, and the Nords had their chances but Jake Obar was equal to the task. Bruce Hathorn continued the momentum making it 2-0 at 13:41 of the third from linemate Kevin Louzier. At 11:24 there was a scrum in the Nords corner and Potter came out of it with two minors and a 10 minute misconduct. Dan McGee received a tripping minor, and Josh "Mad Dog" Obar got 2 minutes for unsportsmanlike and a 10 minute misconduct for verbally abusing the referee, something about telling the ref to "blow your f*ing whistle" after Obar thought the play should have ended before the ref determined it so. In any case, Seth Warren exorcised some demons and netted a beauty on the PP at 10:00 with a close range flip shot under the crossbar from Kelly Park and Matt Authier's passes in front and an initial rebound to cut the lead to 2-1. Unfortunately the close game was short lived as Will Meyer served as spoiler against his former teammates scoring at 9:11 from linemate Gary Smith after a lucky bounce off Smith outside the blueline eluded the Nords D and went right to Meyer who went in and found a hole in JT's armor with a quick shot. That was the backbreaker, and the Nords didn't have much left in the tank to mount an offense. The Tuna, Anthony Shaw, scored at 7:19 from defenseman Jason Rouillard to extend the lead. Then Potter's co-captain and acting GM, stellar two-way defenseman Justin Barwood, ripped a slapper from the high slot past JT (who was screened again) at 4:53 from Meyer and Smith to end the scoring.
