Light benches for Kings vs. Tuck
It might have been the first and only time a team actually felt sorry for the Storm Kings this season. When the warm-up was over a 10-player squad for Tuck complete with 3 approved subs in Jami James, Marcus Ericsson and Shawn McDermott looked down the ice at 5 Kingers. In a true show of sportsmanship Tuck sent the Commish to play for the Kingers while they awaited two more players from their locker room. When all was said and done it was 8 Tuckies (J. Fox, Racicot, Weld, Waterbury, Crapser, Nichols, Hampe, and subs James and Ericsson) against 7 Kingers (Cashman, Coakley, Dupuis, Murphy, Park, Weber, and sub McDermott) due to morning interviews for the first year Tuckies and a game well past their bedtime for the majority of the "veteran" Kingers. Jami James scored first for Tuck pouncing on a pass from Racicot that McDermott deflected past Frenchy at 9:50. Tim Weld found himself in the box at 9:10 for hooking, and then teammate Matt Waterbury 6 seconds later for interference, but Tuck shut down the Kings 5-on-3. At 3:52 Murf helped McD make up for the goal by converting a long pass off the far boards at the Tuck blueline and going in on JT who was also subbing in for Tuck to even the score at 1-1 near the period's end. The only stats for the second period was a penalty to the King's Andy Weber for hooking at 8:59 that the Kings killed off. This was an even game for two periods and both teams played hard at both ends, and the subs fit into the rosters and there was chemistry on both squads. It wasn't until 11:16 of the third that the Storm Kings took the lead for the first time on a goal by Sean Coakley from Kelly Park and Murf. Dean Cashman followed up with perhaps his best and most skilled goal of his UVHL career with a rocket backhander over JT's shoulder with no room except the size of a puck off a turnover in the neutral zone and a Tuck defender all over him that turned the tide of the game. Weber got his second penalty of the game at 8:23 of the third for roughing, but the Big Green Machine & Friends could not capitalize. Tuck captain John Fox got an unassisted goal from some hard work in the King's end at 4:49 to make it 4-2 and keep his team in it. Ron Dupius scored for the Kings barely a minute later from Coakley, and then Coakley set up Cashman at 3:25 to end the scoring. Tim Weld ended the scoresheet entries at 2:08 with a roughing call for Tuck.
