Avs force OT (again) versus Nords

Um, excuse me sir, but who was the UVHL Player of the Week for December 6th, 2005? Listen, buddy, if you don't know that it was Avs goalie Jim Beraldi then you are a frickin' idiot! Beraldi was simply incredible again in a rematch from last week that saw the Avs netminder step it up another four notches that left Nords players shaking their heads on the way back to the bench. The Nords just could not solve Beraldi although they had the lion's share of chances. However, not to be outdone, JT was exceptionally solid in his own end for the Nords and made so few errors that he allowed his team to mount a comeback after going down 1-0 to the surging Avs. This was a well played game that was exciting at both ends. There were no penalties until the third period, and the first goal did not come until halfway through the contest. The Avs struck first against a frustrated Nords squad that had several quality scoring chances against Beraldi only to be turned away when Jami James found the twine first behind JT from linemate Aaron Guyette at 8:15 of the second. Suddenly a 1-0 lead for the Avs seemed unsurmountable for the Nordiques with the way Beraldi was playing and rejecting chance after chance. The line of Jami James at center beween Marcus Ericson and Aaron Guyette was a threat to score for the Avs each and every time they were on the ice, while the Nords combos could not get one past Beraldi. Time ticked through the remainder of the second period with the Avs holding on to their 1 goal lead, and part way into the third until Mike Hickey of the Avs received the game's first penalty for tripping at 12:08 of the third. The Nords countered with Captain Tao Smith on wing with Greg Marsh at center and Dave Willis on the other side until Smith could no longer justify keeping himself on the ice for being such a Klunk and subbed himself for Will Meyer. The Nords PP continued and Beraldi and his defenders kept the Nords at bay and the penalty was just about to expire when Willis FINALLY scored for the Nords at the end of the minor penalty to tie it at 1-1 and inject some life back into the irritated Nords. Meyer and Marsh garnered the assists on the Willis goal at 10:08. Shortly thereafter Marcus Ericson received a minor for tripping at 9:53 and the Nords went back on the PP. Will Meyer continued his late game heriocs and scored at 8:27 from Kelly Park and Ian Coates to suddenly put the Nords up 2-1. Play continued at a frighteneing pace, and the Avs were like a team possessed, determined to score and vindicate their goaltender's performance. Chris Johnson found a hole, somehow, with only 2:08 left to play on a controversial goal that was called off by the official in the Nords end, but was called a goal by the official at the blueline. After an almost face-off in the Nords end the refs conferred and agreed that the puck had crossed the line before the net came off giving Johnson the goal, newcomer Greg Bishop the assist, and the Avs the tie to force OT for the sceond time in three weeks with a late game Johnson goal. Nobody scored in the final two minutes and change, and the exciting shootout followed for the extra point! Johnson continued his hot streak by scoring on JT through the 5-hole to put the Avs up 1-0 in the shootout that we are sure CJ will never let anyone forget. Kelly Park exorcised the demons of shootouts past by not falling down, not missing the net, and not losing the puck and actually scored on a nice deke finding room beyond Beraldi's pad for the puck. JT then rejected Ericson, Beraldi rejected Coates, and JT rejected James leaving it all to Will Meyer for the potential game deciding shootout attempt. Meyer did not disappoint and got some measure of revenge for the dozen or so chances Beraldi stoned him on in regulation by scoring the game winner to give the Nords the extra point and hardfought win over a very worthy opponent.
