Nords seal victory in 3rd over light Tuck squad 6-3
Tuck's lineup was decimated by exams and a long weekend for the First Years and they showed up with only goaltender Meg Becker and 6 skaters (Waterbury, Hunter, Nichols, Racicot, Fox and Hampe), desperately needing 2 willing subs from the Bruins, friends and linemates Seth Warren and Dave DeSchamps, that were approved by Nords captain Tao Smith BEFORE the game to keep it competitive. However, their never say die style kept them in this game until the bitter end. The Nords were only without Deanna McDevitt and were rolling 3 forward lines and 5 D the entire game. It was an even first period until the Nords Ian Coates scored his second unassisted goal of the season with 1:30 left to play. Tuck evened it up in the second on an absolutely sick Gary Hunter goal off a Chris Nichols rebound that saw Hunter shake'n'bake 2 defenders AND Nords goaltender JT in front for an unbelievable goal that should be talked about for weeks to make it 1-1 at the end of two periods. Nords captain Tao Smith encouraged his team to keep digging and win the little battles and their chances would fiind a way into the Tuck net. Linemate Dave Willis took the big captain's words to heart and picked his team up off the third period face-off and took the puck in down the left wing scoring 10 seconds into the last frame with the Nords second unassisted goal in a row to make it 2-1 and changing the momentum clearly in favor of the Nordiques. The Smith-Willis-Nightingale line was not done yet, and their dominant shift continued until Willis scored again 58 seconds later at 13:32 to make it 3-1 with his linemates garnering assists and praise along with him from the Nords bench. Nords defenseman Shawn McDermott prevented Hunter from making it 3-2 by getting a stick on a point blank open net off a close rebound that found its way onto Hunter's stick beyond the reach of goaltender JT, and was met with expletives by Hunter at his surprise that his chance did not make it into the Nordiques net. Tuck captain Matt Waterbury was the victim of an unintentional high stick to the jaw by Nords defenseman Ben Robbins that actually drew a little blood and dazed Waterbury for a few moments and slowed him down for a few shifts, however all chicklets and Canadian good looks remained intact. Luckily for Robbins the infraction was actually interpreted as hooking by official Tony Gove and came with a 2-minute minor instead of a 5-minute major and automatic game misconduct, but the Nords killed off the Robbins minor. Nords newcomer Will Meyer asked the co-commish on the bench in the second period "Who's that?" in reference to Tuck's Gary Hunter who had just shut down the frustrated Meyer three times in a row and whom Meyer was having a hard time beating early in the game. However fatigue may have been a factor for Tuck this late into the game, but they held on strong even after Meyer faced his demons and got a shorty and the eventual game winner at 8:28 with teammate Jason Gaudette in the box for interference (the Nords were 2 for two on the PK, and Tuck received no penalties whatsoever in this hardfought but otherwise clean contest) putting the Nords up with a commanding 4-1 lead. JT was looking at improving his GAA with a one goal victory, but Hunter would have none of it, and scored with 5:52 left in the third connecting with Nichols again on his second assist of the night. After receiving the high stick/hook Waterbury was checked on by co-commish McD to see if he was alright, and Waterbuty replied "No". Perhaps this was the truth, perhaps it was just a clever ploy beacuse Waterbury proceeded to paint the co-commish orange and call him a frickin' pylon putting a sweet move on McD in tight leaving him flat-footed and watching Waterbury close the gap to beat the other co-commish JT in the Nords net cutting the lead to 4-3 making it anyone's game and changing the momentum to Tuck instead at 4:18 assisted by Jim Hampe. However, it was Meyer with the strongest game of the contest who ensured his new team emerged victorious scoring his second and third goals of the period completing the Hat Trick at 3:39 from Coates and Nightingale, and at 2:45 from Coates and Robbins to seal the victory. Nords captain Tao Smith patted himself on the back after the game for putting together the Coates-Meyer-Jones line that even surpassed his own line as the greatest, strongest, and most consistent threat.
