Storm Kings stop the Avalanche 14-5
Storm Kings stop the Avalanche 14-5
Once again this author does not have the room to list all of the goals the Storm Kings compiled in this, their 4th win en route to a perfect UVHL record thus far. What I can tell you is that only two of fourteen goals were on the power play, so the Storm Kings are lethal at 5-on-5. I can also tell you that it doesn't matter if it is a forward or a defenseman that scores for the Storm Kings because they are all contributing. Even goaltender Dan French has more points than this author (2 assists in 4 games vs.0 points in 4 games), and the challenge has been put out that the author willl hang them up if Frenchy finishes the season with more points! Beware, because this could be a close race! Thank goodness that goals are the tiebreaker on total points, but I wouldn't put it past the Billy Smith lover and Ron Hextall puck handler to send one into an open net and become the first UVHL goaltender to score a goal. However, there are some Kingers that are riding on the coat tails of their talented teammates for their inflated stats. As far as the Avalanche go, they continue to be an improving work in progress. They have added to the international flavor of the league by adding Swede Marcus Eriksson to their line up, whom we welcomed to the league during this game, and although they may not go from worst to first like the reg. season Bruins did last year, they most certainly should not finish last at the conclusion of the regular season. Forward Chris Johnson has returned this season with a calmer, and much better attitude, and defenseman Jami James is getting compliments from all opponents, plus an improved roster from top to bottom with fiesty newcomer Sean Hochreiter, and the suprising regular scoring contributions of the hardworking John Brown and Mike Hickey, super-speedy rover captain Sean McCabe, and a greatly improved Kevin Calder on D with Leetch-like Dr. Ed Sheehan as his partner give the Avs just as good a chance as any to meet the Storm Kings in the most likely Whalen Cup Final scenario. However, no matter whom the Storm Kings played on 10/25 a loss was in order for their opponent as their lethal offense continues to be on fire, and you can't ignore their defense either, which could be the best in the league. But, the defensive play of some forwards is a question mark. Kelly Park, who does double duty for the Kingers, was a potential minus-5 in this 14-5 win. "I was on for ALL of their goals", Park remarked about his pathetic defensive effort in the Avalanche game, however his goal and assist offset his defensive stats to a mere minus-3. Floating much, Park? Ever put your head down and hustle to backcheck in your life? What is your top speed, anyways? Highlights of the game for the Avs were Chris Johnson's unassisted goal for the Avs to make it only a 2-1 deficit halfway through the first period, and his 2 goal total and 1 assist for a 3-point night in a 5 goal losing cause sans captain McCabe. Newcomer Marcus Eriksson threw in two assists in his UVHL debut, as did Jami James, and I believe that John Brown extended a 4 game point streak with an assist in the third on Sheehan's goal, and the Avs only lost the 3rd period by a 3-2 margin. The Storm Kings offense was impressive, and Sean Coakley looks like a lock for the Season 3 UVHL scoring title (I've got him in the pool!), even if Kelly Park gets to count his Nordique and Storm King stats together! Coakley had a hat trick and 4 assists, Murf had a goal and 5 assists (4 in the first period alone), Rick Hughes had 2 goals and 2 assists from the blueline, and Dean Cashman had a hat trick and an assist coming back strong from a week off due to an unintentional, but automatic, USA Hockey high sticking suspension. There were 3 penalties in this game, a hooking call to the Avs Al Sorrentino that the Kingers capitalized on with another Marty White PPG a la Brett Hull from Gosselin and Park at 9:31 of the first. Then there were offsetting roughing minors to the Kings Tom Scull and the Avs Caleb Hawley at 7:56 of the first (yes, both went to the box and felt shame), and then in the second Marty White got his second PPG of the game at 3:45 while Calder was in the box for the Avs from defensemen Gosselin (again) and Weber, showing that the abrasive oldtimer definitely still has game and can score and play with the youngsters. For the rest of the scoring, please see the box chart below.
