Nords edge Leafs 3-2 tilt
In the "Battle of the Basement" two winless teams faced off in the middle game last night at the Union Arena. The Nordiques put together three strong periods for the first time this season beating the improving Leafs 3-2. The game was a well matched affair featuring chances at both ends and solid goaltending. Phil Grover filling in for the travelling Ken Lallier was excellent in his season debut only yielding three goals making 26 saves. The scoring started on a Ben Robbins end-to-end rush as he split the Leaf's D feathered a pass/shot towards the goal which found its way off of a skate and past Grover at 10:56 just before he went past the goal line. The Nordiques scored again at 7:41 when Dave Willis potted a Tao Smith feed. The Nords were coasting and opened up a second period three goal lead. Defensemen Tom Dakai had a solid game at both ends of the ice scoring his first of the season at 10:59. Then the Leafs Dave Fitts struck. He flipped a rebound over Nordiques goalie John Turner who couldn't control a point shot from Doug Heavysides. Fitts scored from Heavysides and Dan Leonard at 9:37. The wheels looked like they were falling off of the Nords bus, as an errant play by Dan Jones and a miscue by Turner ended up in the back of the net at 8:46. The second period was all for the scoring but not for the action. The third period saw some great scoring chances on both ends. Neither team could find the twine and the Nordiques held on for their first win of the season. There was some late drama as Heavysides sent a tape-to-tape pass to Todd Nallete who shot high on Turner. Turner got a piece of it with the glove to seal the victory.
