Bruins improve to 2-0 outworking the Nords 7-2
The UVHL's first place team in the 2004-05 regular season continued their winning ways with 5 unanswered goals to seal the victory over a frustrated Nordiques team. Each team had full rosters, and the Nords were only without rover Mike O'Neil, so there were no excuses for either team in this chippy game. The Bruins jumped out early off of power left winger Matt Marrazzo's goal three minutes into the game assisted by defenseman Scott Fraser. It stayed 1-0 for the Bruins until they expanded their lead to 2-0 at 8:12 of the second when Tony DeFelice scored an unassisted goal. With Ryan Sinclair in the box for the Bruins for "tripping" (actually it was another clever dive that did not fool the refs this time) it was Dave Willis scoring for the Nords on the power play set up by Kelly Park and Ben Robbins making it 2-1. That was as close as the Nords would come all night, and although they all skated better than on opening night, the Bruins tallied their 5 unanswered goals beginning at the end of the second, and that's when it all fell apart for the Nords and the Bruins never looked back. The onslaught started with 2:30 left in the second when Bruins defenseman Alec Jessiman took possession along the boards in the neutral zone and charged into the Nords zone leaving 3 Nords in his dust and stuffing the puck past JT who just couldn't defend the big D's rush for the eventual game winner. Adding insult to injury was Bruins winger Sinclair who scored an unassisted shorty with 1:08 left in the second while teammate Mike Harrington was in the box for tripping. late in the second a frustrated Nords defenseman Shawn McDermott had his feet taken out from underneath him and came up swinging with a cheap shot slash to the ankle of the offender Scott Fraser. The Bruins yelled (or was it whined?) for a suspension of the co-commish (for a slash?) and McDermott chirped back about the slew-foot, however ref Tony Gove corrected McDermott saying that the play happened unintentionally and that if it was a slew-foot he would have called it. McDermott apologised to Fraser for the infraction in the post-game handshake, but the frustration kept building for the Nords. The third period started with a 4-1 Bruins lead, and Jessiman added to that total scoring at 12:37 from Don Powers. Andy Holland found the corner of the Nords net from the point off a blast fed by Erik Pearse and Aaron Isabelle who adeptly kept the puck in the Nords zone off of weak clearing attempts. Fraser became the second Bruins defenseman of the night with 2 points scoring with 4:03 left to go off a Sinclair rebound that Fraser pounced on. Late in the third Nords forward Ian Coates found his second gear and generated several scoring chances and backchecked to keep the puck inside the Bruins end more than once, finally having it pay off with an unassisted goal at 3:29 to make it 7-2 in favor of the Bruins. The Nords could not capitalize on the Isaballe penalty at the end of the third, and missed 4 other power play opportunities on the night making it a frustrating outing for a team used to success that was simply outplayed and outworked by the Bruins. Post-game at Off the Green Bruins forward Rob Pelletier lit into the "douchebag" co-commish in a drunken tirade reminiscent of getting bitched out in the principal's office that almost brought a tear to his eye. What kind of a season would it be if a Bruins player didn't bitch out the commishes about something?
