In the final game of the night we had the battle for last place in the league, the Nordiques hosting the Whalers. Both teams came into tonight winless and one of them was leaving the rink with their first win of the season. The game started out rather slow and neither team could really get anything going. With 6 seconds left in the period the Whalers would take a penalty which would give the Nords a power play for the remainder of the first and to start the second period with as the first period would end 0-0.

With the power play to start the second period the Whalers would get called for another penalty which would put the Nords on a 5 on 3 early in the period. While on the two man advantage the Nords were able to break the scoreless tie when Peter Scalia beat the Whalers Ken Lallier high blocker side at 13:04. Although the Whalers gave up a PP goal they were able to bounce back quickly when Mike Avery was wide open in the slot and tied the score at one at 10:56. The Whalers would add another goal at 8:47 when Matt Gauthier would come in on a break way and beat Nords goalie Colin Farr. It wasn"t until five minutes later that the Nords would tie the score at 2 when Peter Scalia would get his second of the night with 3:45 left in the period. The Nords weren"t done there though as Greg Marsh would put the Nords up 3-2 with 2:08 to go in the period. The Whalers didn"t let up after giving up two quick goals as Scott Shaw raced down the ice with Patrick Riley and set Riley up back door to tie the score at 3 with 1:38 left to go in the period. The Period would end with the score tied at 3 as neither team could get the lead and hang on to it.

Heading into the third with the score tied at 3 both teams were conservative on the chances they took as neither wanting to give up an easy goal. It wasn"t until half way through the third period that the Whalers Matt Gauthier gave his team their first lead of the game with 7:53 left in the period. The whalers weren"t done there as they won the faceoff at center ice, then they went d to d and move the puck up to Dillan Pierce on the wing. Pierce skated in the Nords end with speed and let a ripper go from the top of the circle that would beat the Nords Farr high glove side at 7:27. With the Whalers up 5-3 and two quick goals you would think the Whalers would have all the momentum but think again as the Nords would get the games next goal just a minute and half later when Cole Hunter would get set up backdoor from line mate Peter Scalia. With the score 5-4 the Nords didn"t give up and kept working to tie the game, they would tie the game at 5 with 4:21 when Peter Scalia would get his third goal of the night. With the scored tied at 5 and the Nords are gaining momentum the Whalers would get a penalty and give the Nords a power play as well as a chance to take the lead. However, the games next goal would belong to the Whalers. Mike Avery was able to get the puck off the faceoff, go one vs. one against the Nords defensemen. Once Avery was in the Nords zone he would make a quick move to get himself some space from the defenseman, with that space he let a quick wrist shop go that beat Farr with 3:17 to go in the period to put the Whalers up 6-5. Although the Nords gave up a shorthanded goal they were able to get it back on that Power play as Billy Sailer would get the game tying goal at 2:56 mark. The period would end with the score tied at 6 and this game was going to a shootout.

The Nords being the home team deferred to shoot second, the shootout goes like this:
Whalers- Matt Gauthier comes in dekes- save Farr
Nords- Peter Scalia shot wide- no goal
Whalers-Mike Avery shoots wide- no goal
Nords- Roger Phillips shot- save Lallier
Whalers- Scott Shaw- shot high glove- GOAL
Nords-Greg Marsh skates in cuts across circle shoots low- GOAL
Whalers-Dillan Pierce- shot- save Farr
Nords-Pierce Mayhew shot hits crossbar- no goal
Whalers-Patrick Riley dekes- save Farr
Nords- Cole Hunter dekes- save Lallier
Whalers-James Kerrigan dekes- save Farr
Nords- Ryan McGovern shot- GOAL, Nords WIN!!!

The Nords win the game and get their first win of the season. This was a good game that saw several lead changes but the Nords Peter Scalia was the difference as he had 3g and 2a on 5 out of the 6 goals the Nords scored.
