#3 Nordiques Beat #2 Tuck in Regular Season Showdown: 3-2 Shootout

In the last week of the regular season we saw a hell of a showdown as the #2 Tuckies hosted the #3 Nordiques. It was billed as a "Battle of the Goalies" and lived up to the billing. Johnny "Temper Tantrum" Turner bounced back from a rough 8 goal loss to the lowly Whalers last week, stopping 29 of 31 shots and 6 out of 6 shootout attempts. At the other end of the ice was Danny "The Manny" Yacey who was also on fire, stopping 23 of 25 and 5 out of 6 shootout attempts.

The Nordiques opened up the scoring with 8:58 to play in the first period when Jordan "McBreakaway" McGee hit Brian "RedBeard" Racicot with speed entering the Tuckie's zone. Racicot beat Yacey with a quick snapper for the lead.

Tuck killed off a powerplay starting at 5:15 with Colin "Campbell" Carrihill in the box for tripping, only to see the Nordique's Greg "The Butcher of Guelph" Marsh and Tuck's Andy "Hellboy" Helming take matching penalties for slashing each other and then barking juvenile taunts at each other as they headed to the penalty box.

The Nordiques followed their powerplay with a penalty kill to close out the first period as Kelly "The Mouth" Park was whistled for hooking with 1:50 to play in the period.

END OF THE FIRST: Nordiques 1, Tuck 0

Marshy put the Nordiques up 2-0 with 8:43 to play after burying a pass from Roger "The Old, Rusty, Dirty & Infected Dentist Drill" Phillips.

Tuck finally broke through on Turner with 3:15 to play in the period when Halsey "Turn Your Head And..." Coughlin roasted Park in a foot-race then toe-dragged a Nordique's defense to his backhand crossing the crease. Coughlin summoned all the powers from the Turducken's Past, Present & Future and rifled a 100MPH backhand at a ridiculous angle, through a hole that didn't exist in Turner's shoulder, roofing the puck before collapsing in the corner and thanking the Turducken GODS. Legend says that Coughlin's backhander actually merged with another dimension right before it hit Turner's shoulder before reappearing in our dimension in the back of the net. Legend also states that the puck was covered in some sort of primordial-ooze and had teethmarks in it...legend says!

Park was the cause of Tuck's game tying goal with only 13 to play in the period, as a faceoff deep in Tuck's zone was won straight back to Park who in turn threw a weak wrist-shot that was easily stopped by Ryan "The Govenator" McGovern in the high slot. McGovern threw a picture-perfect pass to Helming up the middle of the ice for the breakaway goal where he burnt Turner like a good joint at a party with a bunch of teenagers.

END OF THE SECOND: Nordiques 2, Tuck 2

The last frame was tight. Both teams moved the puck with defensive precision in mind. Not wanting to give up that go-ahead goal, and willing to take their chances in the shootout.

END OF THE THIRD: Nordiques 2, Tuck 2

Both Turner and Yacey were outstanding in the shootout, stopping all 10 of the first 10 shooters. It came down to Marshy, who begged the Nordique's captain to shoot. Marshy rumbled down the ice, freezing Yacey with a head-roll & shoulder drop before firing a heavy snapper a foot off the ice blocker side. Turner was called on to stop Tuck's final shooter and held his ground for the 3-2 shootout victory for the Nords.
