Nordiques Score Early and Often Against Whalers, win 8-3

It was one of those days for the Whalers...a typical Tuesday night for the Whalers. They were in Modus Operandi, giving up a bunch of goals, not scoring enough and losing their ninth out of 12 games this season. The Whaler's effort was there, but their overall team game leaves quite a bit to be desired, as turnovers and poor defensive play put this game out of reach early.

The Nordique's were powered by defenseman Kelly "The Mouth" Park who chipped in a trio of goals and a helper and Ian "The King of Killington" Coates who had a pair of goals & assists. "Gentlemanly" Johnny Turner was solid in net turning away 24 of 27 shots including about 5 or 6 solid scoring chances by the Whalers. At the other night Kenny "Lights Out" Lallier didn't have quite as much fun, allowing 8 goals on 42 shots. Lallier was also responsible for at least a dozen huge saves, but neither Lallier nor his team could slow down the Nordiques.

A major highlight of the game would be the Nordique's Andy "The Other Cheek" Puchilak, who's engine got started every time a Whaler breathed on him wrong. Puchilak took 3 matching calls on the night, roughing it up with Liam "The Rat" Oliver twice and Jason "Toe Drag" Gramling. Oliver learned quickly how to get under Puchilak's skin, telling him he wanted to drop the gloves after their first matching penalties, which suckered Puchilak into actually dropping his gloves and taking on an additional 2 minutes on their second altercation.

The Nordiques got on the board first, and second, and third, fourth and fifth. Four of those goals came in the first period with Greg "The Butcher of Guelph" Marsh redirecting a shot past Lallier at 11:16. Kelly "The Mouth" Park made it 2-0 after a nice play by Pierce "May Day" Mayhew on the boards to keep the puck in the zone, and then dishing the puck to Jordy "Magoo" McGee for a two on one with Park. McGee took the puck down low and feathered a pass back through the defenseman for Park in front all alone. Park outwaited Lallier as he traversed the crease right to left and threw a backhand in past Lallier.

McGee added the next goal from Tommy "The Minister of Defense" Dakai at 7:20. Puchilak & Grambling mixed things up at 4:06 and both went to the box in shame before Park closed out the scoring in the first with a snapper off a faceoff to the right of Lallier.

END OF THE FIRST: Nordiques 4, Whalers ZERO

The Whalers actually played the beginning of the second period tough, and held the Nordiques off the scoreboard for the first 9:39 before a sweet tic-tac-toe play that went from Roger "The Rusty Drill" Phillips to Marshy to Coates on the back door.

The Whalers finally broke through on Turner with 3:42 remaining in the second period when Gramling & Oliver broke in on a two on one. Gramling fired a quick snapshot at Turner who was 5 feet outside of his crease that squeeked through and sat in the crease for Gramling to recover and chip in the empty net. Oliver took his second penalty of the night for tripping on the next shift, allowing Park to complete the hat trick on the ensuing powerplay by jamming home a rebound from behind the net.

Puchilak & Oliver traded pleasantries yet again with 10 seconds remaining in the period sending them both to the sin bin like bad little monkeys.

END OF THE SECOND: Nordiques 6, Whalers 1

The Nordiques added a pair of goals to start the third period to take an 8-1 lead. The first came from off an amazing glove save by Lallier on Brian "Red Beard" Racicot from 15 feet out. The glove save wasn't quite enough as Mayhew stormed in and jammed home a rebound. The second came on another rebound off of a Park wristshot from 20 feet out that Coates chipped in for his second of the night and 12th of the season.

The Whalers followed up with their own pair of goals. A bit of confusion on defense let Gary "The Pearl" Laperle make a beautiful cross ice backhand pass to Gramling who broke in 2 on 0 with Oliver. Gramling sold the shot and threw a pass to Oliver who burried it past a diving Turner. Nate "The Great" Aldrich made it 8-3 with 2:16 remaining after roofing a backhander off of a Jay "The Boni" Zanleoni.

END OF REGULATION: Nordiques 8, Brewers 3

At times it looked like the Nordiques were on an extended powerplay as the Whalers chased to no avail. Are the Nordiques that good or are the Whalers that lost. There are arguments for both sides.
