Kings surprisingly show up late for 9-4 Quarterfinal win over Whalers:

They actually graced us with their presence for a late game, isn't that sweet? But not without bitching and whining from He Who Shall Not Be Named first. I'm speaking for everyone in the league that we can't wait for the modern Storm Kings era to finally be over, but until then they just might leave with the Whalen Cup on their shoulders. It would be their first official "beer league" title, since last season's co-championship was never officially decided, although the Kings unofficially claimed it for themselves. For it being just a so called "beer league", You Know Who seems to care the most about it to the rest of us unworthy folk (who are un-Storm-King-like to even fill in on their lofty roster when they are short players). In any case, the Kings dictator, uh...should I say leader was comfortably home in bed allowing JT to cover his precious net for the Quarterfinal match-up against the hardest working and most fun post-game UVHL team: The Whalers. Could the Whalers win this one? Yes. But was it likely? Nope. Whalers SuperPest Liam Oliver was, ha ha ha...get this one folks..., unavailable for the Quarterfinal because he was: A) cornholing himself with his own butt end B) going to group anger management therapy with Frenchy C) getting his braces off D) all of the above. If you guessed "D" then you are right, even though the official answer is "C". Yep, the UVHL's 2008-09 Most Hated Player was officially leaving puberty and getting his braces off. Say what you want about Oliver, but he does add considerable speed and skill to the Whalers, and the line of Oliver-Bailey-Hayes is as good as any top line in the league, but without it intact for a playoff run the Whale was in trouble even with LeLallier in top form.

The Kings had a solid line-up ready to go, and they jumped out to a early lead. Tommy Scull and Kyle Morin fed Marty White for a back door special (Marty's fav) at 11:21 to go up 1-0. This lead was held and the Kings scoring held off for almost another 10 minutes until Pat Turcotte netted his first of the game at 1:38 from Mike Fitzgerald on a 5-hole breakaway beauty. There were 3 penalties in the first, but no PPG's on minors to Scull for tripping at 6:28, Pattison for roughing at 3:24, and the PP ruining penalty to LeClair for tripping at 3:11.

In the second Turcotte was flying down the boards on a 2 on 1, faked his shot and hit Pattison streaking to the back door at 13:13, also assisted by Mike Fitzgerald. The Kings scored a PPGoal at 12:43 as Fitsy with the puck in the far corner passed it to Scully at the far point. Scully then passed along the blue line to Ian Gill, and then Gilly ONE-TIMED a bomb through traffic with LeClair in the box again for tripping at 13:05, the lone infraction of the second frame. Father Time tipped in his second goal of the game, this one a point shot from Scully at 9:33 to make it an insurmountable 5-0 Kings lead. Whalers superstar, and heart and soul leader, Joey Hayes scored on a breakaway off JT's glove and shoulder at 5:12 to break the scoring drought for the Whalers. A defensive gaffe by Whaler's forward Scotty Leger in his own corner, far corner, tried to throw it cross-ice for a breakout, whiffed and it went 4 feet. Morin grabbed it at the bottom of the circle, made a quick move to the slot and fired a quick shot through LeLallier's gaping 5-holio at 3:41 for an unassisted, rub your nose in it goal, his second of the game. Morin added one more the the Nasty Hatty with only 43 seconds left as he walked out of the far corner, this time to the high slot and fired another quick shot 5-holio on Kenny from Close and Cashman.

Whalers winger Kevin Louzier made it 7-1 with an unassisted breakaway effort at 13:37. Louzier "Jimmy-Jewed" JT to his backhand, and then threw it up and over the pad from in tight. The only penalty for the entire third period was Scully for tripping at 13:16, but the Kings killed it off. Morin once again cut across the Whalers blue line and fired a quick shot back across the grain for his fourth goal of the game. It may have been a pass, or off a skate and in, but it went 5-holio once again. The Whalers made it 8-3 when Chuck Gaede walked out from behind his own net, fired a perfect "Hail Mary" indirect cross-ice pass that hit right at the scorekeepers box and onto Hayes' stick. Scully played it "completely wrong" according to our off-ice reporter. Hayes went in on the breakaway, walked in on his forehand and snaped a shot blocker side, under Turner's arm. Gaede cleaned up some trash in front of the net with 2:25 to go to make it 8-4, and then the Kings scored a late goal with 2 seconds on the clock by Turcotte from Pattison to end it at 9-4.
