Avs Force 3rd Period Comeback vs. Leafs on Jan 30th

This game took place on the UVHL's unofficial "unanswered goal night". These two teams battled hard, and momentum changed more than once, and until a couple of empty netters determined the winner, each team had the lead and tried to take it to the bank. The entire Dartmouth Doctor Connection got involved on the first goal as goaltender Pete Bartline fed the puck to winger Christian Isaac, who then found center Nick Bayley for the goal at 12:41. Bayley and Isaac were symbiotic like Kraft Dinner out there (that's Macaroni & Cheese to you Yankees, eh), and Isaac found Bayley again at 9:45 to make it 2-0 for the Avs. Leaf center Joe Hayes didn't like it, and he answered a mere 40 seconds later at 9:05 from Leaf captain and defender Sean Casavant, who then set-up Jason Loomis for a goal to tie the game at 8:34. Just like that, in 31 seconds, the game was tied, and the Leafs had the momentum. They carried it through the remainder of the period and went up by a goal when John Thomas scored with only 17 seconds left in the first on an unassisted effort. There were no penalties in this fast and clean first frame.

Leaf F Todd Nalette was nabbed for holding at 14:20, and Casavant went to the box for interference at 9:29, but the Avs PP could not solve The Shermanator, who filled in for Lallier in the Leaf net. It went to 4-on-4 when Avs Captain Mike Hickey went to the sin bin at 8:25 for hooking (nice PP,Hickey...), but Bartline held off the Leaf attack for the 54 second Power Play. The Leafs got their 4th unanswered goal near the end of the period at 2:52 when Casavant, who was having a great game and led his Leafs by example, scored from Hayes and Fred Redden. The score was 4-2 Leafs, but the Avs did tally one goal in the second as well, and it came from defenseman Dan Charette at 0:58 from Sean McCabe to give them some spunk at the end of the period.

Isaac added a goal in the third to go with his two first period assists at 13:06, and he tied the game with it and Charette added the assist. The game was 4-4, and now it was the Avs turn to turn it on. Bayley took his cue and scored to put his team ahead at 12:17 from McCabe and that made it 5-4 Avs. Two pairs of coincidental minors were assessed, the first at 12:12 to Avs F Brian Walsh and Leaf F Jason Loomis for roughing (I assume right off the face-off), and the second to Avs D/F McCabe and Leaf F Redden for holding and elbowing respectively at 11:45. Hickey got another for hooking at 9:01, but his team remained focused and maintained their lead after killing it off. The next 8 minutes saw the Leafs do their damndest to fight back and tie it up, and they pulled The Shermanator for the extra attacker with about a minute and a half to go, but the Avs gained possession and control of the puck with 58 seconds to play and McCabe scored from Walsh for the 2 goal lead. The Leafs did not give up, and kept Sherman out of the net, but the Avs got a second empty netter at 0:31 to seal the deal and complete the comeback as Charette couldn't resist sending it into the open net from his own end to give the D-man a rare 2-goal game.
