Leafs lose competitive game to Nords 8-5.

The Leafs welcomed new roster additions the intense Fred Redden, who returned from a brief UVHL hiatus, and speedy Justin Wing, newly recruited and ready to play, and Brian Racicot who was doing duty with the Leafs on loan from the vacationing Tuck squad on their way to one of their best team efforts yet this season. The Leafs were without regulars Chris Gogan, goaltender Ken Lallier, Dan Leonard, Kyle Manny, Dave Riley and Chris Nichols who is also on loan from Tuck. Unfortunately, the Leafs have lost the third member of the Claremont Connection, forward Jon Burke, to a pre-season injury that has ended his season. Speedy recovery, Jon! I'm sure we'll still see you at the bar and in the locker room being an athletic supporter for your teammates! Um, ah, I mean...forget it, you kow what I mean, eh!However, these Leafs rallied around captain Doug Heavisides, a man of few words but who leads by his strong example on the ice, and the firey passionate hockey-lover Sean Casavant to produce a great effort that saw the game tied at 4 until the middle of the second period. The Nords struck first with a Kelly Park unassisted goal at 11:53 of the first against alternate Leaf goaltender Phil Grover who saw time between the pipes for the vacationing Ken Lallier, and Grover kept his team in the game until the Nords scored three late goals in a row after the score was tied mid-way through the game. The Nords opened up a 2-goal lead at 10:47 on a Dyke Shaw netter from linemates Greg Marsh and Jason Gaudette. Leaf captain Doug Heavisides answered with two of his own at 7:05 from Ian Stevens, and at 4:09 from Todd Nalette and Stevens to tie the game at 2 apiece. Nords winger Dave Willis found the net alone with only 48 seconds to go in the first period only to be answered by the surging Leafs at 0:29 on a Fred Redden howitzer that found only twine past JT in the Nords net from Justin Wing. Redden made sure to look into the stands to make sure his wife saw the goal (Didja see that one, Honey, huh? Didja see it? I wanna get lucky tonight! The kids are away and I scored a goal for ya, Honey! Do I get a treat, do I? Who's your Daddy?). OKAY, okay, okay... that's enough you sick bastard! Anyway, Will Meyer scored to make it 4-3 Nords from his centerman Ian Coates at 13:39 but Leaf defenseman Kirt Johnson exerted his will in the offensive end scoring to tie it at 4 at 10:30 of the second from Nalette and Jason Loomis. Nords big center Greg Marsh scored their third unassisted goal of the game at 8:44 to break the hardfought tie. The only penalty of the game went to Marsh at 2:41 of the second for interference, but the Leafs did not capitalize on the PP, and were scored upon only 4 seconds after the penalty expired with a period killer at 0:37 by Ian Coates from linemate Dan Jones who had killed off the second half of the Marsh penalty with fervor. The Nords made it three in a row at 5:30 of the third when Kelly Park walked in at his top snail's pace and found a hole in the Leaf defenders and the Grovinator's armor from Coates and Meyer. To his credit, Park actually backchecked once this game after getting caught deep in the Leafs end on a failed scoring attempt with a rare show of...effort (I can't actually call it 'speed' because he hasn't shown that yet in two and a half seasons, AND has backed-out twice in a race with Not Quite so Fat Bastard). Nice job, Park! So, you CAN beat a PeeWee in a race (we weren't sure). With the score 7-4 Leafs super sniper (no sprinter or backchecker himself) Todd "Sweet Hands" Nalette found himself in the slot against JT face-to-face off a great pass by Heavisides, and just as he has done several times in the past Nalette buried a wrister under the crossbar over the outstretched glove of JT to make it 7-5 with 2:09 to go. That face-to-face series might actually be 4 out of 7 in favor of Nalette over the course of the UVHL's history, but who knows for sure? (JT will! He takes numbers). The Leafs continued to press and JT had to make some quality saves to keep the 2-goal lead after the Nords went down 6-on-5 once Grover was pulled for the extra attacker. However, the Nords found the empty net with 0:53 to go on another Coates-Meyer scoring combo to leave the final tally 8-5 in favor of the Nords in this competitive game.
