Lumberjacks survive strong start from Whalers.
The Whalers were looking for their second win of the season against an under-performing Lumberjacks team. The 'Jacks were the top team in the UVHL last season but have found limited success this season, starting out 3-3-0.
The first period was where most of this game was played with 5 goals scored and the Whale taking a 3-2 lead to the locker room. Opening the scoring for the Whalers was Mike Avery on a nice passing play by Dillan Pierce and Scotty "Sugar" Shaw. Four minutes later Jay "The Zamboni" Zanleoni ripped a snapper past his former goaltender Kenny "The Glove" Lallier from the right but the Whalers didn't sit idle, scoring just 32 seconds later when "Sugar" Shaw beat Chris Pelkey on a feed from Jason Rouillard.
Topping off a crazy minute of play, the 'Jacks immediately responded with a Marc Gattie goal at 5:20...just 29 seconds after Shaw's goal. Gattie's goal was the output of great puck movement between Sean "The Lumbersexual" Murphy, Jordan "McBreakaway" McGee and himself.
Tied at 2-2, the next 4 minutes were well played, with few scoring chances, but the Whalers took the lead with 1:33 left on a point shot from Jason Rouillard.
Three goals was all that the Whalers would be able to manage as the 'Jacks netted the only two goals of the period to take a 4-3 lead. Kenny Lallier made only 8 saves in the period on 10 shots, while Chris Pelkey was only required to stop 5 shots in the frame. Loren "The Leper" Lunt tied the game just 2:29 into the period on a feed from Brian Gattie. Sean Murphy netted the game winner with 5:14 to play from Jordy McGee as he cherry picked and beat Lallier like a rented mule. The 'Jacks took the lead into the locker room after two.
The goaltenders saw more action in the third period, combining for 22 saves...stopping them all. Down by 1 goal, the Whalers called a timeout with 1:32 to play and pulled their goaltender around the 1 minute mark. McGee took advantage of the empty netter for his 6th goal of the season and a little insurance for his team.
