Whalers outlast Dead River with a short bench 3-2

The Whalers may have had the right seven when they lined up against Dead River in the late game. First period action featured scoring chances from several Whalers. Matt Crowson was strong in the nets turning away 12 shots in the period until Scott Shaw finally solved him with 5:40 remaining. Dan McGee feathered a pass across the slot which Shaw on-timed just under the bar. Dead River had mustered only 5 shots in the period though they had chances on breakaways from Kyle Kotsier and another Oiler.

The second period was much more balanced as the Oilers forced the play. Dead River out shot the Whalers in the second 10-8. The scoring was started by Dan McGee who put his own rebound up over a fallen Crowson with a nice backhander at 11:27. The Dead River offense was sparked by breakaways. The first was a nice move by Kotsier who outwaited Turner and snuck a low shot through the wickets at 7:33. The second came from Noel Baxter who overpowered Turner with a strong shot to the stick side. The second ended 2 -2 with the Oilers pressing.

The Whalers bench had just enough to turn the tide back in their favor. The game winner came as Jason Rouillard picked up a rebound from a Turner save in tight. He made a quick outlet pass to Scott Shaw who hit a streaking Zanleoni who made a great east-to-west move on Crowson and deposited the puck in the top shelf.

In the end Crowson turned away 33 in the losing effort and was the best player on the ice for the Oilers. Turner stopped 23 for the win subbing in for a traveling Lallier.
