| Men's League Gordie Mar 7th, 2012 12:22 PM
I try to remain modest most of the time, but I was excited to pick up the Men's League Gordie Howe last night with a goal, assist and penalty. I know that's just an average Tuesday for some of the Brewers, but considering it was my first career penalty and third career goal, it was a feat for me! kpark Quechee, VT

But the scorekeeper had Gaudet getting both penalties for the Whale. Which was you, hold in the first or trip in the second? JTStally Hanover, NH

It was more like "The Dentist" skated into my stick and fell over it, but, yes, that was me in the second :) The Dark Canuck Fairlee, VT

Since there are very few fights in this league, this feat rarely happens. But out of respect for true fans of Mr. Hockey, call it...something else. JTStally Hanover, NH

Since there are very few fights in this league, this feat rarely happens. But out of respect for true fans of Mr. Hockey, call it...something else. I was obviously just having some fun with this rare statistical occurrence for a guy that never appears on the stat sheet, but, if you want to be serious, let's be serious.
If you're a true fan of Mr. Hockey, you'd probably know that the term "Gordie Howe hat trick" in reference to a player getting a goal, assist and a fight vastly misconstrues history. It's believed that only twice in his 1767-game NHL career did Howe ever do all three in the same game (0.11% of games played). By comparison, the current Dictator of Discipline, Brendan Sham-ahan had 17 (1.11%)! That means that on any given night in their careers, Shanny was TEN times more likely to get a goal, assist and a fight than Mr. Hockey.
Over the course of his career, Howe had 22 fights and 1685 PIMs. Let's assume (for stats sake) that each of those PIMs accounted for a minor, he'd have taken 842.5 penalties in his NHL career. That's 38 times as many fights as he had, so we could estimate he might have had roughly 76 games in which he got a goal, assist and a PENALTY...just something worth considering before claiming that I somehow dragged Gordie Howe's good name through the mud. rgrunds Stowe, VT

Right. Howe actually didn't fight that much. Everyone was terrified of him. Very strong.
Ask Lou Fontinato. Maybe he found his ear.

Shannahammer is one of my all-time favorite players, in fact I met him in Toronto for All-Star weekend in 2000. I have yet to wash that hand, and have been cited for food safety violations repeatedly, but I refuse to wash away that silky soft handshake I experienced that day....ahhhhhh...Ok, that was kinda gay, but nonetheless a great experience! how about a Shanatrick? Or a Shanahatty? JTStally Hanover, NH

Or a Shanahatty? Shanahatty made me laugh, so I'll vote for that one. It's your call though, as you're clearly the Shanatic. I agree, he was an awesome player...very much an average disciplinarian...but certainly one of the most fun people to watch on the ice. I still remember when he played for the old Whalers, he was probably the only thing that made that sorry lot noticeably better than the crew now in the UHVL, HA! | | | | | | | |
