ITS NOT OVER! Brewers edge Whalers late in 3rd period

The Whalers welcomed a new player, Peter Lynch, who wore #11 in his UVHL rookie debut. Where they got him from, I don't know, but apparently they don't keep their pants up there... Must be somewhere in the "hood" in downtown Lebanon where the 2 or 3 people of color in the Upper Valley must hang out. Well, at least he wasn't wearing a thong... not one we could see, anyway.

The second shot of the first period went in for Brewers forward Cort Pomeroy from Aaron Mancuso at 13:30, but I missed the goal and was distracted by something shiny. The second shot for the Whalers went in for none other than Gary "Laperle Necklace" at 12:54 who rubbed my nose in it after predicting that he wouldn't take the place of the vacationing Jay Zaneloni on offense for the Whale. Passes from Tom Crapser and Jason Rouillard went across to Laperle who found the net behind goalie sub extrordinaire Matt Albertazzi. Then Tazzy was down and out at 12:34 for Jason Gramling's goal from Zach Aher, and the Whalers were on a roll. Shots were a mere 3-2 for the Whalers at 10:00. The New Guy on the Whalers dove to make a nice pass up to a teammate, and his pants fell down just a little further. Hall sent his first of many over the net at 9:16. Come to think of it, he put at least three over the net in this one, therefore I shall coin a new term in his honor: a "Hall Hat Trick", or "Hall Hatty" if you prefer. He definitely did not learn that way back in Midget hockey when I coached him and Will Meyer back in the day... Right, Nick? A high stick negated a Brewers goal at 7:56, and referees Park and Hadley were adamant. Keith Lazarczyk said, on quote, "I was robbed" by the refs on that one. Whaler Chris Gogan made his return from several weeks off due to injury, and looked good out there, helping his team at both ends. Crapser had the moves, but Tazzy made the save at 6:32, and shots were now 5-5. At 1:17 Rouillard broke his stick and the B's went in 2-on-1, but Lallier made the save. Shots ended 9-7 Brewers by period's end.

A BIG left foot save by Lallier at 14:20 started the period with some action. A nice end-to-end rush was made by Brewers D Brock Barton, but his shot was deflected out as he cut across L to R shooting from inside the circle. Garren Poirier got absolutely mugged, there was no penalty called, and the puck came out from behind the B's net for an unassisted goal by Hall at 11:19 to make it 3-1. Shots were 5-5 at 10:32. A bad pass at 7:47 by Rouillard right to Pomeroy in the slot got through the 5-hole of Lallier for his second of the game brought it to within 1 again. Park said the Lallier "looked like a statue on it". The game was getting chippy at this point, and Gramling was getting pissed. Pomeroy completed the Hatty at 6:29 to tie it at 3 per side when his head hunter shot made Lallier duck, and the knuckle puck went right into the top corner as Lallier narrowly missed it with his glove right beside his melon. The Brewers cheered "Player of the Week" from their bench. Only 14 seconds later Lazarczyk potted an unassisted marker aftet the B's won the face-off and he tucked in in past Lallier, and suddenly it was 4-3 for the Brew Crew. Shots were 13-5 for the B's at 5:02. Tazzy made a right pad save on Hall, then Lallier stoned Mancuso with a glove save at the other end. Gramling and Fletcher traded slashes and went to the box at 1:58. Hall put another one over the net at 0:12, and shots finished 13-8 Brewers for the period.

Another headhunter was sent towards Lallier, but he gloved it at 14:09. Hall made a nice move on Barton but got poke checked by Tazzy, and then Tazzy made a save on Hall on the very next play with his right pad at 12:06. A 5-hole unassisted shorty for Mancuso put a dagger into the hearts of the Whalers at 10:34 with CJ in the Brewers box for slashing. Lynch kept losing his hockey pants, and they just kept sliding down lower, and lower, and lower down his backside. It was kinda like watching a train wreck as the blue outer pants dropped down over his Cooperalls cuz you just couldn't stop watching it. No matter though... Lynch potted his first UVHL goal, pants on or not, at 9:39 on the PP just inside the post from Whalers defensemen Rouillard and Chuck Gaede. A nice 2-on-1 for Gramling and Hall was negated by Tazzy as he came out to challenge. Mancuso hustled in close for a chance at 6:35 getting his stick on it just ahead of Rouillard in a race for the puck in tight to the net saved by Lallier's right pad at the post. Hall swatted in a rebound out of the air at 5:09 to tie the game from Gramling and Gogan, and the Whalers were back in it. Crapser got mugged by Barton as Crapser put on the moves 1-on-1 for a great chance, and there was no call. Players were frustrated with the lack of calls to be perfectly honest. LeLallier made a BIG save on Barton, but the play stayed alive, and Lallier made another save on the scramble, but the loose puck was put in by Bill Fletcher at 2:56 off Lazarczyck's shot. This was after Park waved off an icing that hit another offensive player on their own side of the red line. Laperle let Park have it after the game for blowing it and allowing the fateful play to continue. With the lucky non-call and momentum, the Brewers scored a mere 27 seconds later on Mancuso's second from "The Original" Chris Johnson and Poirier, and that's how it ended... until "ITS NOT OVER!". Ref Greg Hadley called everyone back for a final face-off after instructing the scorekeeper to put 2 whole seconds on the clock after the puck went out of play at the end of the game. Nobody wanted to continue. The zamboni doors were open. The Whalers were halfway off the ice already fantasizing about beer & wings, but "ITS NOT OVER!". Smartly, the Whalers then called a timeout, just to spite Hads, who got the point and thought it was hilarious. Even still, the puck was dropped for the final 2 ticks as Kirt Johnson sat in protest at center ice. Unbelievable. Only in the UVHL. Third period shots were 16-8 for the Brewers.

Final Score: Brewers 7, Whalers 5

Final Tally: Pomeroy got 3 goals for the Brewers, and Hall got 2 for the Whalers to lead their teams, but neither selfish bastard had an assist. Mancuso had 2G, 1A for the B's, and there was a UVHL record 5 UNASSISTED GOALS. IN A ROW. Remarkable, I know, and it wasn't just from the refs being lazy SOB's either - they really were all unassisted. Lallier faced 38 shots, Albertazzi 23.

Final Analysis: The Whalers blew it late in the game allowing 2 goals in the final 3 minutes within 30 seconds of one another. They allowed two quick goals twice, and that was their undoing. It was a very even and entertaining game otherwise. To the Brewers credit, they worked hard enough to get the goals and force a comeback after being down 3-1 early in the second. I hate to berate a fellow referee, but Park blew the icing call based on misinterpretation of the rule, not because he just missed it, and both refs needed to put their whistles to their lips a little bit more to prevent frustrations from growing. Lallier played really well, got shelled in the third period, and really couldn't have done any more to give his team a chance to win. Post-game there were 11 UVHLers from 3 different teams at Bentley's when I arrived - a sight for sore eyes! I even needed help finshing my Bentley's Double Dozen wings, which for your knowledge is 11 plus 11 minus 1, and the pile of bones in front of Feiden, Loomis, and Zagaria got even larger. FYI: the Over/Under on McD's post-game wings is 15, and it was just over by 1. Even Greg "2 Seconds" Hadley made it to the bar afterwards, and we all laughed about "ITS NOT OVER".

See you on the ice!
