Tuck forces shootout with two 3rd period goals in front of 35 fans!

Tuck looked sharp showing up in white for the first time in their 7 year UVHL history. They were absent the fans Steve Kenning predicted pre-game at that point, but by the start of the third the Crazy Tuckies did not disappoint! The Whalers showed up with only 6 rostered players, and needed player ref Jeremy Seidling in net for a second consecutive week, and three alternates: the Nords Jordan McGee who was playing in his third consecutive game of the night earning some lost heart from last week's bail out; the Brewers Chris Dubin who scored a Hatty in the previous game; and the Oilers Bobby Rosati who got an assist in the same game. Tuck had 2 full lines, but were noticeably without star defenseman Chris Johnson. Soon into the period Tuck had 8 fans in the stands fresh from pre-game warm-ups at Bentley's. Dan Yacey looked strong in Tuck's net right from the start stopping the skilled and tenacioous Whalers F Jay Zaneloni in front. Tom Crapser made some sweet moves but couldn't beat Tuck's last two D to get the shot off at 10:45. The first Tuck shot came at 8:36 believe it or not. Tuck D Andrew Helming upended Rosatai at 8:00 adn went to the box for tripping. Z made a nice shot in the slot on the ensuing PP and Yacey made the shoulder save. Dubin was tripped up on a scoring chance by Parker Lytle at 5:38, and during the PK Tuck missed the net on a 3-on-1. By the 4:32 mark the Whalers were outshooting Tuck 9-3. Another good shot was taken by Z off a nice pass in front at 3:06, and Yacey was there again. There were now 12 Tuck fans in the stands to witness the end of the period, and they saw Halsey Coughlin narrowly miss the Whalers net glove side at 1:36. Suddenly there were 18 fans, and then a total of 21 by the end of the period. Shots were 13-5 in favor of the Whalers.

At the start of the second 23 Tuck fans graced our presence. Yacey made a BIG save at 11:03 that made them cheer loudly, but unfortunately there were no flashes of Tuck boobs in the stands. Yacey then made 2 saves, and the 3rd shot went in but the goal was called off on a high stick, and the Whalers Zach Aher went flying. Steve Bates missed the net at 9:34 on Seidling's left. A minute later Yacey made another big save on Dubin, and then another right after! Seidling made the stop on a Tuck 2-on-1 at 7:49 from the right side. Coughlin had a great shot from the slot and Seidling another great save. Tuck had sustained pressure in the Whalers zone around the 6:25 mark. Yacey made a left foot save on Dubin off of Z's nice pass into the zone at 6:01, and the Tuck fans cheered "Yacey!". The Whalers missed a breakaway pass at 3:45 by Jason Rouillard as he fed it right between two streaking teammates at 3:45 that neither of them could grab. At the 2:30 mark there were 25 fans in the stands. Tuck alum and record 4th year Tuckie Ryan McGovern was playing forward as opposed to his usual D, and McG raced back into the defensive zone to make a highlight diving pokecheck on Jordan McGee! By the end of the second there were 33 Tuck fans. A BIG goal was scored with only 6 seconds left by skilled Whalers winger Jason Gramling as he snuk it under Yacey along the ice off a pass from Tom Crapser to make it 1-0 Whalers. This was a very good game, it was entertaining, the action was back and forth during this period, and shots were 14-11 for the Whalers.

"Lets Go Tuck, Lets Go!", "Defense! Defense!", and a new one "Offense! Offense!" was being chanted by the gregarious Tuck crowd full of libations from Bentley's. Some of them left, and a few more of them came, and there were now 34 fans in the stands. "USA!" was also heard from the crazy crowd. A nice glove save was made by Yacey on Rouillard at 12:58. Whalers F Zach Aher pursued Coughlin and hooked him as Coughlin tried to advance with the puck out of Tuck's zone at 12:03. Tuck finally got set up in the O-zone with 1:10 elapsed on the PP, and they had to make a great backchecking effort to deny the Whalers on a short handed goal attempt. Coughlin had soome great moves at 8:35, but Tuck still had absolutely no shots on Seidling until the 8:08 mark. Helming broke his stick at the point, and then dumped Aher on the pursuit on the ensuing 2-on-2, but there was no call on the play. McGovern continued his stellar defensive play and hustled back once again to stop a 2-on-0 cross ice pass at 7:38. Tuck scored over Seidling's glove into the top corner at 7:03 on Josh Cherney's GTG from McGovern and Bates, and the fans went crazy! It was only the second SOG for Tuck in the third period, but it was right where it needed to be. Dubin put one off Yacey's facemask at 5:51, and 21 seconds later the hardworking Aher scored off a puck that squirted in front from Crapser to put the Whalers up 2-1. Jordan Barnett was being called for a trip at the same time, and the penalty was waived. McG blocked a shot at 4:41 in style. Z almost corralled a rebound past Yacey off a Dubin shot at 3:59 that might have put the game out of reach. Aher had another scoring chance at 2:27 saved by yacey coming out to cut down the angle. A beautiful backhander by Helming was saved by Seidling at 2:02. "Lets Go Tuck" chants at 1:10 may have ignited a fire in the Tuck player's bellies, and a BIG GOAL was scored at 0:55 after two missed poke checks allowed Helming to get into the slot and his quick shot beat Seidling to tie the game at 2-2. McGovern upended a hustling Aher at 0:32, and then Aher tripped a Tuckie at 0:14 to disqualify both players from participating in the shootout. It was an exciting third period, and shots were 12-6 in favor of the Whalers.

SHOOTOUT:

The Whalers chose to go first since they were the Home team... In a classy move they went through all of their rostered Whalers players before allowing any subs to shoot.

Gramling - SCORES on drag move backhander
Coughlin - SCORES on forehand over pad on cut across
Zaneloni - missed net, Yacey possibly got a piece with his glove
Hay - R pad save
Crapser - SCORES on a shot under the arm
Cherney - SCORES to extend the shootout on a low shot to the L side
Gaede - L pad save
Helming - L pad save
Rouillard - poke checked
Bates - backhander, L pad save
Dubin - R pad save
Barnett - deke, R pad save
McGee - slapper, blocker save
Carrihill - SCORES GWG on a low shot to the blocker side!

Final Score: 2-2 regulation tie; Tuck 3-2 shootout victory.

Final Tally: Leading scorers were Tuck's Steve Bates and Whalers Tom Crapser with 2 assists each. Josh Cherney had a regulation goal, and the clutch 3rd attempt shootout goal to extend the shootout for the eventual Tuck victory in the 9th round. Yacey faced 39 shots; Seidling 22.

Final Analysis: I hate to say it, but the Whalers had the right subs and several of the right absences to make this a competitive game that they should have and could have won. Tuck's rabid fans and Yacey's goaltending won the game for them as the crowd cheered and pushed their team to force a shootout in the third.
