Bottom of the Barrel: Brewers @ Whalers
ODDS: | Brewers by 1 Goal |
OVER/UNDER: | 7 Goals |
The Whalers are looking for their first win of the season, and hope that the Brewers will oblige. The Brewers sit at 2-5-0 after seven weeks of play, with a 3-2 shootout win over the Whalers in week 3 and a 3-2 win over Dead River in week 5.
Both teams are offensively challenged, with the Brewers scoring a league low 20 goals in 7 games, and the Whalers right behind them with 24 goals. The Whalers have a league worst 49 goals allowed in 7 games, with the Brewers sitting in 3rd to last with 39 goals allowed.
Both teams played tough opponents last week, and both lost. The Whalers played the Nordiques(5-1-1) very tough for 2 periods losing 8-4, while the Brewers were in their game against the Gamblers(6-1-0), down 4-2 before allowing 2 goals in the last 2 minutes of play, losing 6-2.
Look for Jay "The Chin" Zanleoni to start playing with some grit, as he netted a hat trick against the Nordiques last week and finally played with some emotion. Zanleoni has the ability to be a difference maker if uses his shot more and takes his fat ass to the net.
The Brewers have an outstanding goaltender in Matty "The Crow" Crowson, who will keep them in this game. They tend to try and stretch the ice out by floating their forwards, which also tends to put their defense & goaltender in some sticky situations.
If the Whalers can find some consistent defense in front of their goaltender Ken "La Mustache" Lallier, they should be fine. Lallier is looking more comfortable in his new pads, but still gave up a couple of week goals last week to the Nordiques.
The Whalers will fall apart in the 3rd again, probably taking a lead into the last frame...leading 3-2. Brewers will win it in the last 10 minutes with a final of 4-3 or 5-3.
STOP THE PRESSES! WHALERS WIN! WHALERS WIN!
It's true, the Whalers have finally won a game, and the Brewers will forever be known as the team that lost to the Whalers in 2010-2011. In fact, the Whalers didn't just win this one, they cut through the Brewers like a hot knife through a pile of warm shit. It was a combination of the Whalers top line playing a solid game and the Brewers looking like....well....a giant pile of shit.
Both Nick "The Wide & Deep" Hall and Jay "The Chin" Zanleoni had career nights. Hall threw 4 buiscuts behind a bewildered Matty "The Crow" Crowson who saw 39 round pieces of vulcanized rubber hit him en route to letting in 8 goals in the loss. Crowson's counterpart, Kenny "LaArthritis" Lallier looked youthful in this one with 40 saves himself, but only let in 4 goals for the win.
The best player on the ice tonight was Nick "The Wide, Moist & Dark" Hall. Hall had 4 goals in the contest, two of them being amazing, turn guys inside out and make the goalie vomit all over himself from the pure nastiness of the moves that were thrown at him...type of goals. "Big Z" Jay Zanleoni was a huge reason for Hall's success tonight, as he assisted on all 4 of Nick's goals including 3 first assists. Zanleoni added a pair of goals himself in a career night where he had 6 points. Zanleoni's puck control opened up the ice for Hall, but it was also Zanleoni's passing that allowed Hall to pick up speed heading into the attacking zone.
The Whalers jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first period with Zanleoni & Hall each getting a pair of goals and Chris "Goatee" Gogan sniping his own. "I closed my eyes and said a prayer to the God of Goatees before I shot. That God loves me!" said Gogan of his goal as he stroked his well groomed facial hair.
The Brew Crew received some bad news early in the game when Chris "Doobie" Dubin, arguably their best player, snapped his skate blade in half and had to pull out a pair of discarded used skates from lost and found in order to continue playing. Dubin looked lost and a bit awkard in the new skates and reportedly picked up some bed bugs in the process.
Cort Pomeroy had a nice night for the Brewers with a pair of scores and an assist. Pomeroy broke Lallier's shutout bid with 2:24 remaining in the first period from rookie Keith Lazarczyk.
At the end of the first period the score stood at 5-1 in favor of the Whalers. It was the best hockey they had played all season, and they were without one of their top forwards "Sugar" Scotty Hall, who will forever be remembered for not taking part in the Whaler's historical win.
END OF THE FIRST: Whalers 5, Brewers 1
The Whalers did what they do in the second period, and started to lose their edge. After scoring two early goals from Hall, their legs & desire seemed to start to fade. Halls goals sandwiched another Cort Pomeroy goal but saw the last 10:23 of the second period go scoreless.
END OF THE SECOND: Whalers 7, Brewers 2
The Whaler's late game troubles continued as they were outscored 2-1 in the 3rd period. Maybe they just pulled their collective foot off the gas pedal being up 7-2....nah, they have issues in the 2nd half of games. Regardless of their offensive troubles late, the Brewers were only able to muster 2 goals to close out the game, ruining a nice night by Lallier. Garren "teed Penalty" Poirier took a Pomeroy pass at 13:02 to make it 7-2, which is crazy that Poirier scored a goal but didn't take a penalty tonight. Tommy "The Craponator" Crapser netted his 3rd of the season from Jason "Toe-Drag" Gramling at 9:25 before "Big" Brian Smith lumbered his way into the zone and beat Lallier with a snapper from 25 feet out through Lallier's gaping 5-holio.
END OF REGULATION: Whalers 8, Brewers 4
The Whalers looked like an elite team in the first period, then it slowly went downhill from there. The truth of the matter is that they were solid against a bad team. The Whalers have the tools, but lack any sort of game plan, usually tiring themselves out late in the game.
Bottom line is, until the Brewers prove otherwise, the Brewers are the bottom of the barrel in the UVHL season 2010-2011.
