Both teams have been playing well, and I have seen their team games come together moreso as better cohesive units. Who will win? I honestly don't know, and it will come down to who shows up yet again. It is hard to predict a UVHL battle when you don't know what players are or aren't going to be there. Based on track records and what I have seen lately this is a coin toss, and it should be very evenly matched.
Whalers shock the world....beat Dead River.
My apologies, but this one is going to be short and sweet as I reffed the game before this one and played in the one afterwards, so I really only saw 20 minutes of play at the most. What I did see was a 1 goal game changed by an incredible individual effort on a Rob Pattison rush where Pattison tucked the puck past Tim Chapp's left foot as he cut across the crease from right to left. The goal put Dead River up 2-1 and it stayed like that for a long time. Hadley was snatching pucks out of the air with his quick glove and was rocking a 1-goal game fo ra long time. The Whalers tied it up with less than 10 minutes to go on a Gary Laperle goal, and then Jay "The Finisher" Zaneloni FINALLY lived up to his pre-season billing and got the GWG with just over a minute left!
Both teams were evenly matched and it was a tight game. Each team had a few important players missing from their benches but it balanced out in the end in a very close game.
Post-game an unnamed player from another squad said the the Dead River Oilers could be the best team in the league, and that was the team he least wanted to face in the playoffs. When everyone is there they are scary -scary and sick with talent, scary with incredible defense, and scary with a team game. As we all know, anything can happen in the playoffs, and on every night you have to show up to play in this league or you're gonna get smoked. The Whalers seem to be coming together and have been playing well lately. They have forced good teams to OT, have won in both regulation and in shootouts in the past three weeks, and have done so with variable players on the bench.
Final Analysis: Okay, what to expect from here on out for these two squads? They can both win on any given night, and they can both show up with half a roster or half the effort needed to compete in the UVHL this season. They will be in 5th and 6th place as the playoffs start, and either team could have an upset quarterfinal victory and end up in the semi-finals. However, for the Dead River Oilers or the Whalers to get past the semis and end up in the Whalen Cup Final is a longshot.
Don't forget to vote for the Long Trail Player of the Week! A case of beer is on the line, eh!
Thanks to all for a great first half of the season, Kelly Park now takes the reigns for the remainder of the 2009-10 season. See you at Bentley's for post-game wings and a Bleu cheese bath!

| Don't go glove side... Jan 19th, 2010 12:19 PM
Both goalies have GREAT gloves, so whoever penetrates the 5-hole the most could win... Good luck to both squads!

Kenny is out for two weeks and has Timmy subbing in. He is a solid goalie and plays on K2 in the B league, and also plays Tues/Thurs mornings @ Campion, too. He is a solid, acrobatic goalie with good fundamentals.

McD Is this a planned absence or an injury? He did double duty on Sunday night and was not psyched about it. Hope he didn't hurt himself in the later skate.

KP Vacation as I understand it. Kenny played well in Sunday's double-header, no injuries.

| Big comeback fo the Whale Jan 20th, 2010 01:30 AM
An even game until the last minute as I understand it. Hadley was sporting a 1-goal game for a long time, and his glove was hot (as usual). Pattison scored a beauty tuck-in goal to go up 2-1.
