Kingers v. Brewers

The Storm Kings vs. Brewers was a great, clean battle of two of the UVHL's best. The Brewers(4-2-0) were trying to bounce back after a rough 6-2 loss to the rising star that is the Gamblers(3-2-1). The Kingers(3-2-1) were coming off of a sub-par 8-6 win over the lowly Tuckians(1-5-0).

The Brewers have been backstopped by the excellent play of Petey "Big Bird" Bartline & some new firepower from rookies Billy "The Kid" Fletcher, Brock "Lesner" Barton & Brian "Smitty" Smith. The Kingers have the league's point leader in Ryan Sinclair, with 23 points in 6 games. Not to mention his linemates Robbie Barker with 14 points in 3 games and Timmy Leroy with 20 points in 5 games. The netminding has been iffy for the Storm Kings as Danny "Le" French needs some new contacts, hosting a GAA of 6.14.

This game started out a bit slow and only accumulated 19 shots on net in the first period, with the Brewers Brian Smith knotting the first two goals of the game only 67 seconds apart. His first came 5:24 in from Kevin "Cutthroat" Calder, quickly followed by a Fletcher to McCabe to Smith tally. Ryan "The Kitchen" Sinclair cut the deficit in half after capitalizing on a turnover in the Brewer's zone and then making Petey Bartline look like a gelatinous BLOB with 4:13 to go. Other than the 3 goals, the only remotely interesting tid bit was that the Kinger's Tommy "Guns" Scull hooked Fletcher going in all alone. Fletcher took offense to the placement of Scully's sharpened blade in his crotch region and responded with a quick jab to that UGLY mug / mask of Scull. Scull responded with a couple of gloved A-Rod slaps back at Fletcher in an embarrassing show of manly-less aggression, earning both matching calls for roughing and Scully the additional 2 for the hook.

END OF THE FIRST: Brewers 2, Storm Kings 1
SAVES: French(STK) 7, Bartline(BRE) 9

The second period was exactly like the first, the Storm Kings outshot the Brewers and underscored them 2-1. This time it was Fletcher who scored back to back goals, followed by a Kingers tally late in the period. Fletcher's first came at 8:03, unassisted which invoked a weird response from French who quickly said "Ah, game over, let's go get a beer". Not really what you want your goalie saying when you are only down 3-1. Fletcher struck again from Sean "Playboy" McCabe 2:08 later to put the Brewers up 4-1. The Ageless wonder, Marty "Man-Boy" White cut the lead in half from Deano "Beano" Cashman & Mike "The Frizz" Fitzgerald with a powerplay goal and the Brewer's Garren "The Greek God of Hooks" Poirier in the box, for what else, a hook.

END OF THE SECOND: Brewers 4, Storm Kings 2
SAVES: French(STK) 15, Bartline(BRE) 22

REMARKABLY, for the Storm Kings at least, the 3rd period was penaltyless. That's not to say that there weren't some calls that the refs let go, but it was ultimately a clean game for both teams. The Storm Kings hit first, with a Ronnie Dupuis breakaway goal from Tommy Scull to make it a game and pull the Kingers within one. Both teams battled for the next 8 minutes where the Kinger's outshot the Brewers but couldn't break through on Bartline. Fletcher completed the hatrick with 3:29 to play from Garren Poirier. Fletcher added his 5th point of the night with an assist after being sent ass-over-tea-kettle but a sliding Stuey Close. Fletcher's sacrifice pushed the puck forward to Barton who walked in all alone on French with 25 seconds to go to close the game out 6-3.
