Storm Kings continue to roll with 8-5 win over Potter, on way to the Finals
The #2 seed Storm Kings hosted the #3 Potterians on Tuesday night in what ended up being a UVHL classic. Potter was entering the playoffs riding a 3 game winning streak as they beat all 3 teams leading up to the playoffs INCLUDING a 10-5 win over the Kinger's, which turned around their 0-3 start to the mud league. The Kingers were on a two game win streak, including a 6-5 nail biter over the #1 seeded Brew Crew.
The Storm Kings were supported by the tender hands of Matty "The Milk Man" Marrazzo who contributed an astounding 4 goals, 3 assists and 2 PIMs to the solid 8-5 win. Marrazzo was outstanding and owned Lallier all night. Other contributions came from defensive stud Thomas "The Train" Scull who dished out 3 helpers and added a bit of grit with his 4 minutes of sin binning. "Slick" Kip Oberting had an excellent night as well with the crucial first goal of the game and 2 helpers to boot.
Potter spread out their scoring among five separate sticks, including a 3 point night from Douglas "Speed Racer" Heavisides (1g, 2a & 2 PIMs), as well as a goal and an assist from "Wet" Willy Meyer, "Jumpin" Jason Rouillard & "Cherry Pickin" Gary Smith.
Neither goalie was spectacular in this game, as Daniel French "Toast" let in 5 while turning away 22 Potter duds, and Kenny "Le Five-Hole" Lallier allowed 7 in and turned away 29. Don't get me wrong, both netminders had some decent saves, but the game was pretty much left up to the offenses to take.
The game opened up with your typical post-season flavor as both teams were extremely careful to not make a mistake or take a bad penalty, which is EXTREMELY uncharacteristic of the Storm Kings who didn't go to the box until the 3rd period. There was very little activity through the first 5 minutes, but in the 6th, the Storm Kings finally struck when "The Milk Man" Marrazzo found Kip Oberting deep in the slot all alone. Potter bounced back, just over a minute later when "The Danimal" Dan Ammel finished off a Heavisides pass to tie the game at 1 apiece. The Potterians took a 2-1 lead with 6:56 to go. The Kingers tied the game up with 4:28 to go on Matty Marrazzo's 1st of four on the night, but Potter jumped right back at them with 3:28 to go behind a Willy Meyer to Dougie Heavie goal. The Storm Kings tied the game back up on the power play with just 49 seconds to go in the period and Potter's Heavisides in the Sin Bin for Tripping. Potter's power play goal came from "Mean" Dean Cashman from who else but "The Milk Man'.
END OF THE FIRST: Storm Kings 3, Potter 3
SAVES: French(STK) 9, Lallier(PTR) 7
Things were looking good from Potter entering the 2nd period. They had the #'s and had slightly outplayed the Storm Kings in the first period. Unfortunately for them, the Storm Kings are really good and regained the lead in the second behind a pair of goals from Matty Marrazzo, both assisted by Kipper Oberting. There was also only one penalty in the period which sent Potter's Gary "Goontown" Smith to the box for body checking. Although, having played both WITH AND AGAINST the Storm Kings, the body checking penalty was probably fully justified. Potter looked extremely winded, and were ultimately outshot 15-5 in the 2nd frame.
END OF THE SECOND: Storm Kings 5, Potter 3
SAVES: French(STK) 5, Lallier(PTR) 15
Tommy "GUNS" Scull took a retaliatory body checking penalty just 20 seconds into the 3rd period, setting up a Willy Meyer power play goal with 12:52 to go and bringing Potter back within 1 goal. That one goal deficit would be as close as Potter would get as the Kinger's stormed back with the next 2 goals behind a Mike "The Fridge" Fitzgerald & Marrazzo's 4th of the night. POtter tacked on another to bring the score back to 7-5 with a Jason Rouillard power play goal, before "Tiny" Tim Leroy hit an open netter from the red line with just 14 seconds to go while down a man.
END OF REGULATION: Storm Kings 8, Potter 5
SAVES: French(STK) 9, Lallier(PTR) 7
