Avalanche roll to another victory over Bruins
Ah, week two.....game one.....Bruins @ the Brew Crew. A vastly improved Bruins squad who have been revitalized by youth, not to mention the fact that Greg "Gaping Five-Hole" Hadley no longer protects the pipes, were out to prove to the world that week one wasn't a fluke.
The Brewers on the other hand had their own game plan in mind...prove that they could stop an odd man rush, play some defense and focus on a team game, all of which is new to Dr. McSelfish Bayley. Sean "I'm too pretty for hockey" McCabe kick-started the offense for the Brewers by beating John Chamberlain low glove side exactly 5 minutes into the game. Chambo, who was solid again in net despite the loss turned away 32 shots on the night but couldn't stop Isaac as he burst into the defensive zone on a sweet / ass-lucky behind the back pass from Kevin Calder. The jury is still out on whether Isaac's goal was a shot or a pass back to Calder that beat Chamberlain on the ice with 7:40 remaining in the 1st period.
The Bruins bounced back as Matty "I need some wingers" Marrazzo jammed in a garbage goal off of a Mike Harrington shot 3:04 into the 2nd period. One of the WORST plays I've EVER seen was committed by All-Star goaltender Petey "I should never try to handle the puck" Bartline as he decided NOT to make the easy clear off the boards and for some reason threw it right into the gut of a forechecking Donnie "Darko" Powers. To Bartline's credit he got some GOOD WOOD on it, I saw the welt on Powers after the game, but the puck dropped right onto Power's stick for the easy goal which capped the scoring in the 2nd period.
The 3rd was all Brewers, maybe they were motivated by the free Long Trail Beer awaiting them at the bar, maybe it was good team play.....nah, it was definitely the beer. The guy most motivated by the beer and possible underage ladies was Nick Bayley who received a great pass from Joe Lyle to walk in all alone and expose Chambo for the rookie he is. Bayley's post game comments suggested that he respected the rookie netminder and was hoping to trade the veteran Bartline for Chambo and a couple of cases of Pabst Blue Ribbon. Lyle added another assist on a great play as he stole the puck from rookie Bruin Jeff Hawkins as Hawkins was trying to break out of the zone. Lyle took a slap shot from the point, bad rebound by Chambo right to the stick of an awaiting Christian "Defense?" Isaac who obviously had no intentions of backchecking on the play.
That's it, 4-2 Brewers. Solid play by both teams, both goaltenders. The Bruins have drastically improved their defensive zone coverage and team play. The Brewers continue to show their emergence as an Elite Franchise in th UVHL.
