Storm Kings double-up Leafs 8-4 to finish reg. season on Feb 20.
The Leafs started out en fuego in this match-up, and JT did double duty for the Leafs with G Ken Lallier out of town. They forced Storm Kings superstar Sean Coakley into an interference call at 11:10, and used the momentum from the PP to score at 9:00 off the stick of John Thomas, assisted by Jason Loomis and Kirt Johnson. Leaf captain Sean Casavant was nabbed for holding at 8:27, but the hard work of the Leafs paid off with a SHG by the speedy Jason Loomis from fellow penalty killers Thomas and Chris Gogan, and it was 2-0 Leafs. Somebody had forgotten to tell the Storm Kings the game had started, but once Coakley and Adam Hogg figured it out, the tide turned in the Kings' favor. Coakley cut the leaf lead to 2-1 at 5:09 off passes from John Murphy and Hogg. Coakley then fed Hogg for the 2-2 goal at 3:11, and the period ended with a last second goal with only 0:03 on the clock to make it 3-2 Kings heading into the second with all the momentum on Coakley's second goal of the period from Storm Kings captain Dean Cashman.
Coakley scored early in the second at 14:12 from the stalwart and lanky veteran defenseman Stu Close. Leaf F Dave Fitts made it 4-3 to return the deficit to one goal at 13:26 from Todd Nalette and Joe Hayes. Coakley continued his hot streak and gave the Kings the 2-goal lead back at 11:59 from linemates Hogg and Cashman. Matching minors were doled out to Leaf F Nalette for holding the stick, and to Kings D Andy Weber for roughing at 11:32, and play continued 5-on-5. Hogg took over at 8:47 and was fed by Coakley and Cashman for the goal, and then Hogg netted an unassisted effort at 4:19 to make the score 7-3 and the game well in hand. The Leafs had their chance to pull closer with Murphy in the box at 2:29 for hooking, and Weber in at 1:06 for the same infraction, but their PP proved ineffective against the PK skills of Coakley and Hogg and the other Kings defenders.
In the third Coakley added his 5th goal, unassisted, at 9:56. The final Leaf goal came at 7:35 when Thomas got his second of the game from Loomis, and both players earned their third point of the night on the play. Late in the game there were 3 Storm King penalties, the first was to Tom Scull for holding at 2:56 (only his first penalty of the game, eh! Nice clean hard work there, Tenacious D!); the second to the always calm and smiling Stu Close for roughing (believe it or not) at 1:22; and the third to goaltender Dan French for roughing at 1:11, but the Leafs could not find the back of the net on the 5-on-3 and the score remained as is.
