Avs secure 3rd place with tough win over Tuck Super 7 on Feb 20.
The Avs had their team game going in this game, and they had to against Tuck because if they lost it would drop them to 4th place in the standings. Tuck was present with 7 skaters again, and Jeremy Siedling (Dartmouth Club goalie) was in net for the absent Anik Cote, and they took it to the Avs from start to almost the finish. Turco had the Avs spinning around in their own end, and if it wasn't for the heriocs of Pete Bartline in the Avs net they never would have had the chance to win because Turco would have had 14 goals (at least!). This game went right to the wire, and it was incredibly exciting and looked just like a playoff game.
Nick Bayley started off the scoring for the Avs with an unassisted goal at 11:29 of the first. Peter Hanbury potted two in a row to give Tuck the lead on goals at 7:37 and 6:01 from Turco, and from Alek Roomet and Turco respectively. The period finished tied 2-2 with another goal by Bayley at 4:35 from linemate Christian Isaac.
The second period started with another Bayley goal at 12:44 from Isaac. The period played out until 3:52 when Chris Johnson found the back of the Tuck net from linemates Brian Walsh and Travis Coe, and it was 4-2 Avs. Tuck answered with a goal only 35 seconds from the end of the period after Turco fed defenseman Ryan Burkart to bring Tuck back within one.
Burkart scored again to tie the game 4-4 at 12:46 of the third, and the Tuck Super 7 were flying. They were controlling the play, keeping it in the Avs zone when Bayley and Isaac weren't on the ice, but Bartline and the Avs team game in their own zone kept Turco's multiple efforts off the scoresheet. Turco was gettig shots, setting up teammates, but the Avs kept most of it to low percentage chances, and Bartline took care of the rest. Credit is due to the work ethic of the Avs and their veteran players like Mike Hickey, Hank Bouchard, Brian Walsh and Al Sorrentino, for keeping it cool and keeping up with the young legs and talent of Tuck. The Avs went up 5-4 on Brian Walsh's goal-mouth goal at 7:13 when Bayley found him in the slot for a quick pass that Walsh buried, and momentum returned to the Avs for a short while. Matching minors for roughing were the first penalties of the game at 3:08 to Avs Dan Charette and Tuck's Ryan Burkart. Turco contiued his wizardry, and Tuck had several more chances, and they buried one 10 seconds later at 2:58 to tie it 5-5 on Jamie Greenthal's goal from sniper Hanbury turned assist-man. Isaac had a chance to score, but he got hauled down with a head of steam while carrying the puck and crashed hard into the boards to the side of Tuck's net. No call, and Isaac was pissed, but he kept his cool and wasn't hurt. We seemed destined for OT, but Bayley was the hero again after he broke into the Tuck zone off passes from Sorrentino and Isaac to find himself alone in front of Siedling to the right side of the net, and Bayley's shot glanced off the shoulder of Siedling and under the crossbar for the go-ahead goal with only 1:46 to go! Isaac got the insurance goal on the empty net from Bayley at 0:26, and was hauled down again on the play (or a play right after the goal, I can't remember exactly which), and he sure didn't like that one either. Turco and Isaac had words at the end of the game, and it is clear that these two don't like each other very much. Isaac dropped his helmet and gloves in the corner after the play was over, with noone around, while he was getting up off the ice out of frustration from being hauled down two plays in a row in which he had the puck and was tripped up by a Tuck defender only to slide hard and fast into the boards risking injury and more. He was questioning the non-call on the second one when Turco piped up from the Tuck bench and the two expressed their feelings for each other. Bayley came over to pull his winger away from the Tuck bench and avoid a physical confrontation. Turco questioned the lack of penalty on Isaac for dropping his gloves, but it was clear to the refs, and the Commish, that it was not done to challenge anyone to a fight, but out of sheer frustration. Turco was given a minor for unsportsmanlike with 0:00 on the clock, and then a 10 minute misconduct for unsportsmanlike when he wouldn't let it go or his negative comments about the refereeing stop. 'Nuff said. See you in the playoffs!
