Storm Kings Halt Avs Early Season Run for 3-way tie
The Avalanche entered this game high on top of the UVHL mountain at 3-0. The Storm Kings are arguably the most talented and deep lineup in the league, depending on who shows up, and this battle was built up after last week's Avs victory over the Nords and it lived up to the hype! What a great game! I saw most of it and it was the best UVHL game of the season thus far. It was fast paced, hard fought, and evenly matched. Both teams worked hard for the win and they traded goals early to set the tone. Turco scored for the Kingers at 10:02 from veteran D-man Stu Close. Avs D Hank Bouchard went to the box for interference at 10:00. Avs Superstar Nick Bayley answered loudly at 9:23 with a shorty from co-star linemate Christian Isaac, a Canadian connection on the Avs first line. Mike Fitzgerald put the Kings ahead at 7:14 on a goal set up by Turco. One half of the Storm Kings Tenacious-D, Tom Scull, went to the box at 6:45 for hooking. Travis Coe made sure his team entered the second period even-up at 2 apiece with his goal at 3:38 from Dan Charette. Bouchard started the period with another penalty at 14:39 for slashing, and the Storm Kings PP capitalized on Fitzy's second of the game at 13:27 from Turco and Scull. SECOND ASSIST ALERT! SECOND ASSIST ALERT! ATTENTION ALL UVHLers! The refs have given out a second assist! (I don't believe it! I thought there were only unassisted goals in the UVHL, with the occasional first assist given out to players that hound the refs for it on the 7th goal like Marshy...). "Dr. Answer" Bayley got another only a mere 28 seconds later to tie the game at 3 at 12:59 from Isaac and "Dr. Set-up" Christian, and the refs have started a trend with yet another second assist. Frustration set in and the Kings took a slew of penalties in the next 10 minutes, 4 in a row to be exact, and the parade to the penalty box began with John Murphy at 12:20 for hooking. Bayley got ANOTHER Hatty when he scored at 5:10 of the second from Isaac, with his 3rd assist, and D-man Tom Fallon, to put his team ahead of the Storm Kings 4-3. Murf and ref Ed Stillson had words after he was called for holding at 4:37, and then part deux of Tenacious-D, Artie Stout, went to the box for bodychecking at 3:57, but his teammates killed off the 5-on-3 and Frenchy made some key saves to keep his team in it. Close went in for interference at 2:00 to complete the King's penalty parade. Greg 'Goose' Gosselin scored to tie the game at 9:46 of third from Dean Cashman and Marty White. Avs goaltender Peter Bartline finally got tested in this game by the potent Storm Kings attack, especially in the third, and showed the league his mettle and skill beween the pipes to any naysayers that might have assumed he was a lesser golaie after his first 3 games. Isaac got called for roughing right after Goose's goal at 9:15 and the Kings went ahead on the ensuing PP and Fitzy got his Hatty and the GWG at 8:12 from Turco, who got the first assist on all 3 of Fitzy's goals. With Coe in the Avs penalty box at 2:12 for tripping, Turco got his second of the game and 5th point of the night on the PP scoring at 0:57 from Murf and Scull.
