Avs take Bruins in OT after regulation ends 4-4
The Avs will find no excuses from the Bruins for this game, only tipped hats for their strong performance as the Avs put together a strong game en route to an overtime win. Avs goaltender Jim Beraldi was clearly the star of the game and continues to improve each week after a 5 year hiatus from the net. However, the Avs started on the scoresheet with first period penalties, not goals, as Kevin Calder was sent for tripping at 8:29. The Avs struck first with a goal by John Brown at 5:15, assisted by Calder making up for his earlier infraction. Later in the first it was Aaron Guyette scoring for the Avs at 1:32 from Marcus Eriksson to make it 2-0 for an encouraged Avs squad. The Avs made it 3-0 at 6:40 of the second on a goal by Chris Johnson assisted by Mike Hickey. Avs forward Caleb Hawley was called for slashing at 6:22, and Bruins superstar Ryan Sinclair was called for holding at 6:06 to even things up. Guyette added to his stats sheet with a hooking minor at 4:27, and the Bruins continued their momentum from the PP and translated that into a Mike Harrington goal at 2:11 from Sinclair to finally solve Beraldi in the Avs net, who was having a particularly strong game frustrating the Bruins. The Bruins were called for two penalties late in the second and killed off minors to Alec Jessiman for tripping at 1:50 and to Rob Pelletier for bodychecking at 1:31 holding off the Avs 3-on-5 for a minute and forty-one seconds. During the PP Avs defenseman Jami James pursued Ryan Sinclair into the Bruins' zone as Sinclair ragged the puck back attempting to waste time. James caught Sinclair on the boards by the blueline and Sinclair turned with James right on top of him. I didn't see a stick, but somehow James went down and held his face with blood dripping onto the ice. Sinclair immediately went to his side to make sure he was okay and signalled to the refs to call them over because James was hurt. The commish took care of the cut at the side of the rink, but while James was receiving first aid the Bruins mounted their comeback in his absence as the Avs missed his strong defense and puck control. The Bruins scored at 12:20 of the third with power winger Matt Marrazzo's marker from playmakers Dave DeSchamp and Aaron Isabelle, and then capitalized on the Avs shock and panic with another goal 10 seconds later, this time from defenseman Scott Fraser from DeSchamp and Marrazzo to make it a tie game at 3-3. Avs goalie Jim Beraldi received a delay of game minor at 8:07, but with James back to defend the Avs prevented the Bruins from pulling ahead on the PP until Marrazzo fed Alec Jessiman at even strength to put the Bruins up 4-3 with only 5:18 to go making an impressive comeback. Marcus Eriksson forced the OT shootout by tieing the game for the Avs at 3:30 assisted by captain Sean McCabe. Offsetting minors to Bruins gentle forward Tony DeFelice and Eriksson at 1:30 proved uneventful and the shootout was on! Avs goalie Jim Beraldi stopped two Bruins attempts (Andy Holland and Ryan Sinclair) only to have Aaron Isabelle roof one over his shoulder with a sweet move. The Avs Chris Johnson had already scored against the Bruins goalie Greg Hadley on a 5-hole move, but Hadley rejected Avs D Ed Sheehan with the big pads and quick leg. That left only Jami James to either end the game or force a sudden death 1-for-1 shootout. James wiped the blood from his eyes and headed towards the net, swerved in and found Hadley's 5-hole to win the game and give his team the extra point and some confidence to boot.
