BLUE FINISHES REG. SEASON WITH 8-6 WIN OVER WHITE
A third period penalty-fest could not stop Blue from edging White by 2 goals to end the regular season. White kept it close after coming out strong again, fresh off their inspiring OT loss to Silver last week, but could not capitalize to even the score before the buzzer sounded.
The first period scoring started at 7:07 with Blue's captain Dave Fitts putting a hard shot past Greg Hadley from Chip Davis and John Murphy. White answered back 15 seconds later to even it at 1-1 when Scott Fraser made a nice rush off a pass from Seth Warren beating John Turner, who was subbing in for a vacationing Dwight O'Hara. The period ended 2-1 for Blue when Todd Nalette scored at 6:52 from Chris Vigue and Kevin Louzier.
White's Aaron Isabelle got another past Turner at 7:40 of the second, with assists going to Don Powers and Shawn Branco, to tie it at 2 apiece. Yet again the other squad answered back, this time it was Blue's Chip Davis 'chipping' in (couldn't resist that one either...) to put his team ahead only 25 seconds later with a fine unassisted effort. Blue expanded their one goal lead to go up 4-2 to end the second when Jason Young scored with 25 seconds to go, assisted by a mystery #12.
White, determined to keep it close, and with Hadley keeping them in it the whole game, started the third period strong with 2 goals to tie it at 4. Mike Harrington closed the gap to 1 goal after a feed from Jay Smith, and a mystery player to be named later (no #13 on either team...) scored on the PP for White to even it, with assists from Smith and Warren. Chris Vigue scored at 7:13 from Louzier only to have White's Isabelle answer back 30 seconds later, this time from Branco and Harrington to tie the game at 5 up. Chippy play put many players from both teams in the box in the third period - a total of 7 penalties per team in this contest, a reflection of a close game but at times undisciplined play. Nalette put Blue ahead at 4:28 assisted by Louzier and Murphy. With powers in the box for hooking, White dug deep and potted a shortie with only 2:08 to go in the contest to tie it at 6 when Branco put it past a shocked Turner, with assists going to hardworking Fraser and Isabelle. The score now tied with minutes remaining, and the forced OT against Silver from last week fresh on their minds, White had a shot to improve on their season yet again. However, Blue's Doug Heavisides with a clutch goal, scored the eventual game-winner with assists going to the usual suspects Nalette and Louzier with only 1:18 to go. White pulled their goalie in a last ditch effort only to have Heavisides seal their fate with an empty netter at 0:04 to end it 8-6 for Blue.
Final Score: Blue 8-6
Final Analysis: Cinderella was not in the building tonight, and White would have to settle for another close game that was well played and reflected their improved team play. Blue looks ready for a semifinal match-up against Silver. Both teams need to stay out of the box if a berth in the Finals is to be in store. The refs need to bring their bifocals to the next game if they expect to read the back of players' jerseys when giving out goals and assists. The UVHL will be glad to sponsor the "Help a Ref Foundation" for refs with ailing eyesight next season, and will continue to hire refs who are visually challenged as an equal opportunity employer.
Final Tally: Kevin Louzier - 4 A; Aaron Isabelle - 2G, 1 A; Todd Nalette - 2G, 1A, Doug Heavisides - 2 G incl. game winner; Shawn Branco - 1G, 2A; Scott Fraser, Mike harrington, Chris Vigue, Chip Davis - all with 1G, 1A each; Dave Fitts - 1 G; Jay Smith & John Murphy - 2A each; Don Powers 1 A; 2 mystery players with a goal and an assist respectively.
