RED KNOCKS OFF SILVER 9-6 TO FINISH 10-0-1
A usual second period flurry spurred Red to victory over Silver to finish the regular season with an unprecedented 10-0-1 record. Determined to bury the team that put the only blemish on their record, Red broke Silver's spirit with a 5 goal onslaught late in the second in an otherwise close game. Ryan Sinclair factored in on 7 of Red's 9 goals to improve his UVHL league-leading PPG to a remarkable 5.75! Silver's Kelly Park clinched the UVHL's inaugural regular season scoring mark with a 4 goal 1 assist effort to edge out Blue's Kevin Louzier by 2 points!
Mark Turco started it off at 11:08 of the first beating John Turner off feeds from Sinclair and Sean Coakley. Silver's Kelly Park, with an outstanding game of his own and looking right at home against the caliber of Red's offense, began his quest this night for the UVHL scoring title down 3 points to Kevin Louzier of Blue. Park, not to be outdone, evened it up at 1 at 8:35 with assists to captain Tao Smith and hardworking Poli Nightingale. Sinclair started the scorefest of his own with 2:50 to go from assist meisters Coakley and Gary Hunter. Silver answered back to make it 2-2 with less than a minute to go when Dyke Shaw, the UVHL's senior member, scored on a pass from Dan Coffey.
The score remained tied and each goalie turned away several good scoring chances over the next 8 minutes. Lallier and Turner kept their teams in it for most of the game, but Red kept the lead for the remainder of the contest after Andy Weber sent a poor angle shot from below the bottom of the circle past Turner when he tried unsucessfully to go wide on McDermott. The "shot" fooled Turner as both he and McDermott thought it was unlikely a shot would be taken, and virtually impossible for one to go in, and it snuck past Turner's foot when he went to rebalance himself on the changing angle. The onslaught had begun. Red scored a mere 8 seconds later when Sinclair rifled one past McDermott's right side and over Turner's shoulder from the top of the circle, both defending players still rattled by Weber's goal. Silver settled down a little, but Red's play being extremely strong and confident with the lead, made Park's second goal of the contest, assisted by Jason Gaudette and Smith, only slow the bleeding. Turco scored on an unassisted breakaway, followed by two goals from Coakley, both assisted by Sinclair. One of Coakley's goals came when Turner coughed it up behind the net to Sinclair who fed it to Coakley in front who then put it past a floundering McDermott in the crease. This made it 7-3, and Red's 5 second period goals all came within a span of only 3:18 to seal Silver's fate.
Determined not to finish behind Louzier, Park turned it on in the third for the sake of pride and scored just 37 seconds into the final period with an assist from Dave Fitts who was subbing in for an injured Dave Willis. Sean Coakley completed a 2 goal, 4 assist effort, including the eventual game winner, with Red's final goal of their three minute and change onslaught.
The score then remained 7-4 for almost 10 more minutes of back and forth hockey when Silver's Poli Nightingale capitalized on a passing sequence from Tom Dakai and Park, making it 7-5 and renewing hope for Silver at 3:49. Park's assist and fourth point of the night sealed the deal and ensured him the UVHL's inaugural scoring title for the regular season. It was short lived as Sinclair scored 24 seconds later seeming to sense the urgency in Silver's game, making sure that Red kept control with an unassisted effort. Park added an insuurance goal to pad the stats with 1:01 left just to make sure with an unassisted effort of his own. Sinclair finished off Silver and a fine night for himself with 18 seconds left on a feed from Chris Clark to end it 9-6. A penalty-free effort by Silver in which they had 4 power plays could not overcome the big Red machine's offense.
Final Score: Red 9-6
Final Analysis: Red is truly the UVHL's elite team whose motto is surely " The best defense is a great offense". Silver's league leading lowest goals against could not blemish Red's 10-0-1 record any further in an unusual game which saw rare defensive breakdowns by Silver and 9 goals against, by far their worst shellacking (?) this season. Both teams appeared to have the playoffs on their minds with the 1 and 2 seeds already locked up before this final regular season tune-up. Let the real season begin!
