RED COASTS TO 10 - 3 VICTORY OVER WHITE
Offense-minded Red continued their UVHL dominance with their usual 2nd period flurry, superior puck control and passing, which saw them coast to a 10-3 win over White. After more than 10 minutes of scoreless play to start the game, and several scoring chances by both squads, Red's alternate player Ryan Sinclair scored an unassisted goal to get things going for Red. Just over a minute later Marty White, playing in his second UVHL game, scored over JT's shoulder with assists from Cashman and Weber. The score was 2-0 after the first.
Second period action was fast and furious. The White squad, who actually wore their new Black/away jerseys, was unusually light with players to start the game. Shawn Branco and Scott Fraser made their way into the game and eventualy made their presence felt (more on this later). Red turned JT into a shooter tutor in the second with 6 goals on great passing plays and individual efforts. Sean Coakley scored just over a minute into the period, assisted by Gary Hunter, and then scored again two minutes later with assists from Hunter and Sinclair. Mark Turco potted a fine unassisted effort at 6:49 of the frame, which was quickly answered at 6:34 by a hard working, but frustrated White combo of Branco from Aaron Isabelle and Jay Smith. A minute later Gary Hunter scored an unassisted goal for Red. White answered back again at 3:21 when Branco took a nice feed from Fraser and Smith to beat O'Hara in the Red crease. Play was back and forth after that until Coakley completed the Hat Trick with 45 seconds to go, with assists from Al Sorrentino and Gary Hunter. Thirty seconds later it was Kirk Kardashian in the slot for Red, assisted by Turco and Coakley to finish the period 8-2 in favor of Red.
Tension was high in the third and penalties were more abundant than goals. Minor penalties for holding the stick, high sticking, slashing, a misconduct, and hitting after the whistle provided evidence that nobody was in a good mood. With his third penalty of the contest Branco unfortunately had to leave the game with 5 minutes left to play. Ryan Sinclair completed the Hat Trick with consecutive goals in the third period, with assists to Coakley and Hunter respectively. A fantastic individual effort by White's Aaron Isabelle to finish the scoring at 2:42 saw him steal the puck from a Red defenseman attempting to carry the puck past the blue line, beat the other D and then roof it over a sprawling O'Hara for a highlight reel marker.
Final score: 10-3 Red. (there goes JT's goals against average...)
Final analysis: Red is the team to beat, and seems to have the inaugural UVHL title in its sights.
Final tally: Coakley - 3G,2A; Sinclair - 3G, 1A; Hunter - 1G,4A; Branco - 2G; Turco - 1G, 1A; Isabelle - 1G,1A; Smith - 2A; 6 other with players 1 point each.
