Dead River shows heart in 6-4 loss to Brew Crew

We welcome yet another lady to our league, Alexandra (Ally) Zagaria, as she made her rookie debut with the Dead River Oilers in a solid and well positioned effort on D. She joins the likes of Deanna McDevitt, Kylie Ammel, Anik Cote, Michelle Labbe, and the Gamblers Allison Malcolm to grace our league with their feminine presence. But make no mistake! The girl can play. It wasn't until 11:38 that DR had their first shot on goal, and the period was kinda boring to be completely honest. Brewers captain Garren Poirier took a hooking call at 7:16 on Zagaria as she blew by him with the puck down the left side. There was a nice chance by DR's power forward Rob Pattison on the PP at 6:18, but Matt Crowson was there to make the save. A cross ice pass to Brewers F Chris Dubin at 3:23 from Aaron Mancuso and Jason Yehle led to the first goal just as speedy DR winger Jason Loomis was coming out of the box for hooking, so technically it wasn't a PPG, but you get the idea. If you don't then go watch soccer cuz you can't keep up. Brewers D Brock Barton took down DR's Evan Duggan at 1:33 and went to the box. I hear congratulations are in order for Brock and his wife as they are now expecting their first child! Way to go, eh! Shots stood at 9-6 for the Brewers after the first 15 minutes.

There was a scramble in front of the Oilers net and Greg Feiden made the first two saves, bt the third chance went in at 13:02 to make it 2-0 Brew Crew. DR's Dean "Playmaker" Cashman made a nice defensive play covering on D stopping the Brewers on a 2-on-1. "Power" Pattison made a GREAT cut across the net right to left at 9:37 fed by Cashman in the neutral zone, but he could not get the shot away. Keith Lazarczyk missed garnering a breakaway pass from his Brewer teammate as he slacked off in the neutral zone. Brewers alternate Jordan McGee, playing in his second game in a row on this UVHL night, hit the post on a backhand double deke breakaway contiuing his scoreless drought despite highlight skill and scoring chances. A cross ice pass for Duggan from Chris Warrington and Pattison made it 2-1 as he put it just inside the post at 6:35. poirier bodychecked Kyle Koetsier after hooking him at 5:48, but the PP was negated with Too many Men for DR at 4:24. Shots were 11-10 for DR in the second, and the game was more exciting as it went on.

The third period was a scorefest! Lazarczyk rifled a big shot over Feiden's glove into the top corner at 14:37 from Brian Smith. There were some nice saves by Feiden and then Crowson at 13:25 as the action continued and the pace quickened. Pattison took a slashing call at 12:58 muttering "Fuck that guy" as he sat in the sin bin, but whom he was referring to I do not know and we can only speculate. A recent (and imaginary) UVHL Poll had Garren "Dr. Hook" Poirier with 98.3 percent of the vote and "Some Other Brewer" with 1.7 percent. There were lost of covered pucks by the goalies without there being any actual shots on goal, and the total shots were 6-2 for the Brewers at 7:48 of the frame. Duggan continued his stellar play with an unassisted SHG at 7:25 with Greg Hadley in the box for tripping. Duggan took the puck from the neutral zone, cut to the middle and took a backhander a few strides into the Brewers zone that went between both defensemen just as they started to step up, and it fooled Crowson 5-hole! If I were to guess, and based on the past 3 weeks, Duggan MUST lead the league in shortys, and has to be up there in unassisted goals alongside Marrazzo as well. The score was 3-2 Brew Crew with half a period to go. Poirier and Cashman were going at it battling for the puck, position, and space along the boards since early in the second period. The Brewers had 2 shots, and the second was put away by McGee to get the monkey off his back on the rebound at 4:41 off a Lazarczykk shot in close. The Oilers came back, and Duggan answered once again to complete the Hatty at 3:19 off a great diving play by Pattison from behind the net as Pattison made the pass from his stomach out in front to Duggan for the goal put past Crowson's blocker as he was moving to the right. Boby Rosati also had an assist on the play. This was a MUCH better period by both teams! Another shot beat Feiden, this time by Dubin who got his Hatty with a mere 53 seconds left from Lazarczyk, who got his 4th point of the night, and D-man Barton. To be honest, the last two goals needed to be saved by Feiden to keep his team in it. Oilers captain Greg Hadley fed a beauty pass to Jason Loomis at 0:28 who played hard all game and scored under the left pad down low to finish the scoring.

Final Score: Brewers 6, Dead River 4

Final Tally: Lazarczyk had 4 points (2G, 2A), and Dubin had 3G to lead the Brewers in scoring. Evan Duggan had 3G of his own for Dead River, and kept his team in the game answering three Brewers goals in a row. Shots were 35 against Feiden by the Brew Crew, and 24 against Crowson by the Oilers.

Final Analysis: Dead River kept coming back, and that made it a very entertaining game to watch. Duggan gets an honorable mention for Player of the Week, but there were too many players on winning teams that knocked him out of the nominees. Regardless, Duggan is a tenacious force that scores shortys and unassisted goals.

See you on the ice!
